He later earned an MA in Mediterranean Ancient History from Yale University, where he captained the school's pistol team, and proceeded to earn his PhD in Roman military history, writing his thesis on the early development of Roman military deployment. After teaching at several smaller institutions, he was offered a position teaching history at Miskatonic University, and had just gotten settled when the initial outbreak occurred.
