The Rabjohns Hotel
Description
A six-story brick pre-war building. A large hand-painted neon sign, severely corroded, hangs awkwardly above a cement porte-cochere leading into an inner courtyard parking area. The entrance to the courtyard has been crudely and permanently barricaded by a crude mixture of lumber, hotel furnishings, and cement.
First floor windows have been barricaded, many upper floors windows remain open. Fire escapes have been sawn-off at the second floor.
History
The Rabjohns Hotel was built as a multi-occupancy building in the late 1920s, with the intention of serving as auxiliary housing for staff of the former St. James Catholic Seminary located to the east. The building remained unnamed until post-war years when it was converted to an extended-stay housing unit for servicemen returning from oversees, when it was known as the St. James Resident Hotel.
In 1968, the neighboring suburb of Lockettside has become significantly urbanized, the Arch Diocese of Malton sold the property and buildings of the Seminary to the ouwnership group that would eventually build Tompson Mall \ Tompson Mall on the site. In addition to the seminary, the St. James hotel was also sold, to a group of residents, led by the Rabinowitz, and Johnson families.
Now known as the Rabjohns Hotel and Suites, (Suites was dropped in 1982) it was a financial success for the proceeding decades; until larger, more modern hotels eventually led to hard times. A subsequent costly face-lift intended to re-brand the Rabjohns as an "intimate, boutique hotel for the discerning traveler", only served to accelerate the decline of the property.
At the time the outbreaks hit, the property had fallen into disrepair, the Rabjohns ownership group were insolvent, and bankruptcy proceedings had been scheduled.
