History

Is your name Stephen Laux Kulko?

Yes.

You are a resident of the State of Tennessee, in the United States?

Yes.

Is this confession made of your own will, free from duress or coercion?

Yes.

Tell us what happened.

I suppose it's her fault. My situation, that is. I had said we should try Aruba - my friends had all gone for spring break back in high school, and I stayed back for want of funding. But my baby wanted to see Malton, and we were young, and she had the most heavenly face…

So yeah. We came to Malton for our first vacation together. Fucking Malton, of all places. And we did the tourist bit, saw the sights, went to the restaurants in the guidebook. You have to understand, this was a big deal for me. Not like we were married or anything, but I don't make a whole lot at the firehouse and I certainly don't get a lot of vacation time - so for me to burn both for the year was supposed to show her how serious I was, without, you know, going so far as to put a rock on her finger.

Anyway. One thing I do whenever I'm in a new city is I drop by a local engine company, drop off a Memphis FD T-shirt, try to pick up one of theirs. Shoot the shit for a while, you know? So I went down early in the morning, hoping to catch the shift change around 0800 hours, while she was still asleep. I've always liked how your trucks were bright yellow over here… although I'd never ride one myself, no sir, red is nice and traditional for a piece of apparatus. I left her in the bed, kissed her goodbye, and went downstairs.

Your engine men were very receptive - not so much for the truckies. I stayed a good two hours in the kitchen, drank probably an entire pot of coffee. Only left when the entire house - and what seemed like the entire department, from the urgency on the radio - got banged out for various EMS runs and riots. So I headed back to the hotel… and that's when things got weird.

Weird how?

Weird like the fucking receptionist at the hotel was dead. His throat had been torn out, chunks of flesh missing. Weird like there was a pile of bloody, dead bodies outside the elevator - not like I'd be stupid enough to take the elevator in an emergency anyway. I found a cop - dead, of course - at the landing before my floor, and I took his sidearm. Thank God you people realized your cops should have firearms after 9/11… I digress. The hallway was empty, I ran my keycard through the door to the suite and saw blood. Everywhere, just blood. I followed the trail through the kitchen, into the living room, and I found a woman's body - looked like a cleaning lady - with a knife through her eye socket. My hands were shaking. The door to the bedroom was slightly ajar; I pushed it all the way open and…

And I saw her. It's odd. Her face was still perfect. Just… eerily pale. And her eyes were blank. When she groaned, that's when I knew it wasn't her. You probably won't believe me. This is stupid.

Just keep talking, and we'll keep recording, and we'll sort it all out at the end.

I've been on ambulances for years. She was dead. Dead, and moving. All the other corpses were on the ground, she was up and… well, shambling towards me. I told her to stop, told her we had to get her help, but she kept coming. So… so I shot her.

How many times?

Twice, at first, in the chest. Like you're supposed to. I dunno, I've never shot at a person before, just targets and deer. But she didn't stop coming. I had to backpedal into the sitting room, while she lurched after me. Tripped over the maid's body, and then I saw the knife. So I stood up, scrambled, back, and shot her in the head. She… she dropped like a goddamn stone.

Do you need a tissue?

Fuck you. I shot her. I loved her and I shot her and she's dead.

Here's the deal, son. We're the law in Dunell Hills now. And she was dead before you got there. You're free to go, but this city is under quarantine and I doubt you'll last too long. You want to do some good while you're waiting to die, you can pick up your badge and gun on the way out. Report to Omega Squad and get the hell out of my sight.

Wait… what? I can't go home?

You're not going anywhere, except where we tell you, or to the grave. Now get out of here.
