| You browse the pages of the notebook, searching for something interesting. There seems to be poor logic in where writings and maps are placed.
Soon enough, on the back-side of a page smudged with pencil greyness and dislocated letters, you find a scrawl of words elaborating the North Eastern Border map... Written is what designates the colours on the map as suburbs. You already supposed that. The centre area of the map is an older area with older buildings. The black line at the top is the border; closely beneath that is what is called the "Waste Line" that the author considers generally impenetrable––and acting as a better quarantine than the border itself; and below that is a mix of commercial and industrial sprawl. (The author seems to imply that the border, which stretches off to some imprecise distance, does not completely encompass the city, but only some portion of it.) There is the forest, and by the colour and correspondence with recognizable structures, you know it is that weird forest that lead precisely to the place you set out from, which is to say it did not go anywhere (by some impenetrable confusion, it always went back on itself). The author entitles it, as if it did not have a name before (or the name was lost), as nothing more complex than "Large Forest." It stretches a lot further than depicted in the map, and the author postulates that it overcomes the breadth of the border. The author mentions that Black River ends in a lake on one end and leaves the city on the other (which end is which way is unwritten). Nothing is said further. There are the train racks that run the bottom and left side of the map, and you thought them of peculiar interest when you first saw them, but the they are only mentioned as being "inert and going no place useful." Mentioned are things referencing things elsewhere. There are still more pages to browse. |
