History
Michael Dauncey was a firefighter who died in a tragic crash in 1967. While speeding to a three-alarm fire, two small children darted out into the path of the fire truck. Horrified witnesses described how, without hesitation, Chief Dauncey spun the wheel hard, sending the engine hurtling into the brick Coathupe Library building. The front driver's side of the truck's cab collided directly with the western front corner. Michael Dauncey was killed outright. None of the members of his fire-crew were seriously injured in the accident that claimed his life. Chief Dauncey was declared a hero by the mayor of Malton and the Earletown council. By proclamation, the mayor changed the name of Harmony Park to Dauncey Park, to memorialize the life of the man who sacrificed himself to save others.
