Stokell Road

Description

Stokell Road is typical of Malton's characteristically short thoroughfares. Running five blocks, it is home to a cinema and several office buildings. St. Isidore's Hospital is accessible nearby.

History

Stokell Road became notable during the early 1900s, when it was home to Morris Tanner and his "Stokell Road Gang." Tanner ran protection rackets, illegal gambling venues, and prostitution rings until he was killed in a shootout with officers from Shadwick Walk Police Department.

The street was briefly used as a staging point for riot officers during the early days of the Malton epidemic.
