Description
Meeker Plaza School is an example of the modern style of school construction, with large windows and a neutral-color exterior. This school was for kindergarten through sixth grade, with each grade being on its own floor. The school was closed for summer vacation, and in the middle of renovations at the time of the outbreak.
Meeker Plaza School was first constructed in 1983 due to crowded classroom conditions at Ellard Walk School. Meeker Plaza was designed as an elementary school, with Ellard Walk becoming the junior high school and both supported by Warfield Boulevard High School in Hollomstown. It was, as typical of the time, low and flat, with grey block walls and no exterior windows in any of the classrooms.
However, in January 2001, the school burned to the ground. An investigation revealed that the fire was started by a sixth grade student after receiving failing grades in several classes. Construction crews immediately began work on a replacement school, with classes being held in the meantime at Ellard Walk, Warfield Blvd., and even in some empty offices at The Stribling Building.
The new school was completed in June 2003, and was hailed as a new era for students. The classrooms are large and well-lit, and there is a large courtyard area for students to play in during recess. Most importantly for the school district, this building has required almost no maintenance compared to the old building, and the energy bills are roughly 43% lower.
This new school was not without controversy, however. Many parents protested when Necrotech donated computers and science lab equipment to the school, seeing it as business trying to buy out government. Eventually, the parents subsided, and the equipment was installed.
Once the 2003-2004 school year started, there were several strange cases of illness among the students and staff, with very little information available. However, no more cases occured after winter break 2003. The afflicted staff and students never returned to the school, which generated large amounts of rumor mill fodder. The 2004-2005 school year was mundane and uneventful, almost like a calm before the storm if you look back at it. When students left for summer vacation in June 2005, work started on renovations to the school, which were to include updated PA systems, a GPS-calibrated centrally-controlled clock system, an upgraded computer LAN, and solar panels on the roof to help reduce energy costs further. Work barely started before the outbreak came, and life in Malton hasn't been mundane or uneventful since.
