In 1983, the Burdwood bank was the scene of a tragic hostage situation.
At 9:30 am three armed men entered in bank.  However, the bank had recently installed electronic locks and none of the working tellers had been trained to operate the locks.  For the next two hours the patrons and staff of the bank were held hostage, until the bank manager arrived.  The local police had determined that by sending on their own person; they may be able to end the confrontation.  Unforunately or rather foolishly, the person chose had recently been featured on a local Channel 4 news story.
The robbers recognized the man and immediately opened fire.  When all the violence ended, the three robbers, as well as: six patrons, four staff and two police officers, were dead.  Surprising, the robbery ultimately benefitted the bank.  Since the bank was not at fault, the numerous news stories that followed greatly increased publicity of the bank.  Additionally, the bank set-up funds for those killed in the robbery.  The following year, the bank had nearly doubled in patrons.
