You'd have though the whole zombie outbreak was bad enough, but evidently several other things had to go wrong at the same time...

Namely, three major other disasters occurred concurrently with the outbreak:

  • The military, in attempting to cut off all routes into and out of the city, accidentally severed a major gas line on the south edge of the quarantine zone. While there were minimal immediate casualties, the military then had a rather large crater to build the border around - and by the time they had done so, the commotion had attracted numerous people from within the city - both humans and zombies - and military casualties suffered in containing this particular damaged area were high.
  • Possibly as a result of the gas line explosion, two separate older structures farther north collapsed, which indirectly resulted in an evacuation unit being trapped and all associated personnel slaughtered before they could make good their escape.
  • Lumber Mall, having been bombarded by an incredible amount of artillery by the army, was also a death trap for survivors - zombies were attracted by the barrage itself and the resulting fires, and those who tried to flee the city to the east were met with military resistance. Many perished in the resulting vice-grip, though Lumber Mall was quickly secured by civilians, possibly with the aid of army engineers trapped in the quarantine zone.

Those in-the-know about the events surrounding the actual act of containment by the military also reference their enormous casualty rate in initial conflicts and causing civilian casualties indirectly as the "fourth" major disaster of the quarantining operation.
