Behind the Eyes of Madness
Prologue

It's been twenty seven years, since the reclaiming of Malton, and the horrors that those inside succumbed to, and still, I am gathering information from those that lived within those walls all those years.

Today, I find myself extremely nervous, and perplexed, for, I must sit down and some how decipher a mans point of view from what is at last count over one thousand different personalities. What transpired to shatter ones soul, mind, and worse, commit mass murder that rivals the body count of World War II, and Vietnam combined.

Not much is known about the man known as Matt Aries before the outbreak, except he was your normal everyday person. In a land where everyone was given a experimental miracle pharmaceutical drug that seemed to have the body get rid of all impurities such as sickness, disease, extend life, it is of little wonder why their seemed to be no one that could die, and stay dead.

This case is one that everyone is trying to get, but thanks to my research on the survivors, and lengthy work into Maltons Revival so many are doing, the government gave me exclusive access. I am the only one outside of the medical field that will get this chance ever. It's a honor, and will make my career without a doubt. This does little to calm my fears, as my mental eye goes over the images and first hand witness accounts of the deeds he has done.

As I cross the threshold of 'The Malton Insane Asylum', a chill runs down my spine, and my inner voice tells me to run, and not to look back before it's too late. The guards do little to sever this feeling of danger. What am I getting myself into I wonder?

This colossal monolith of white, houses some of the most infamous of Maltons survivors. Some like Matt have killed many survivors during those pandemic times, others here were living undead for so long they are unable to cope in normal society any longer.

The technology here is also state of the art, military grade, restriction collars that immobilize the wearer by shutting down their synaptic responses from electricity shocked right into the spinal cord. In this it will keep the patient alive since their is no known cure as of yet, however, those who have died since the end of Maltons apocalypse have remained dead, and no reporting of raising of the dead has been done since the last of the Zeds was revived.

"Good morning ma'am. John Greystone to see Matt Aries. I have a interview in part to the Jericho Initiative & the Malton Reform Act."

*I am given several pages to read over and sign from the receptionist behind the desk who according to her name tag is named Elaine.
In the pages are such things as a waver to hold the hospital liable for any danger that may happen to me, and any attempt to sue will be null and void by signing below. I know this all to well and skip over the rest of the several pages of the like. The last page, is a statement from Matts various doctors, stating what to watch out for, how to stay safe, and what can be done to condemn the rage that may ensue, although as they state they are confident their will be none since their has not been a sign of the psychosis in a few years. This I take time to read over carefully, and, allow it to sink in.
After this lengthy read, I'm escorted in silence down a long hallway each side is lined with doors leading to other inhabitants. Each have a plaque on the door reading their number, as well as their name, or known alias. I pass by these doors ready the names as I go. Roland Thompson the Headless Gunner, Pathetic Bill, Sonny Corleone, the list goes on and on, with names of Maltons most notorious killers.
We finally arrive at the destination. The door reads Patient #1183626, Matt Aries. Cold sweat begins to bead up on my brow as I stand and watch three guards to open the door. One to access the retinal scan, another for a finger print scan, and a third for a key card, and voice verification. I can't imagine the security getting any stronger.
One of the trio of guards tells me that two of them will be waiting outside if they are needed for any reason. He reassures me, that, if their is any commotion at all they will enter the room, and I am not to worry. He ends with good luck, as I enter the room.
A moment of tension for me as I see Matt at the far end of of his room next to a book shelf with his back to me. He is not what my minds eye had envisioned, dressed in a tailored suit of black, balding patch at the back of his head surrounded by white hair. The last known image of Matt before this man before me was of when he was brought in to the hospital. A man with patches of fire red hair, bloodied bandages holding together a long destroyed clown mask. A dulled clown nose no longer holding it's shine sat oddly in the center of his face, which if not for the eyes of madness, would attract attention from all. For a moment I wonder if this is the right person, then the door doors slams home, and locks behind me, and he looks in my direction.*

"Ah, greetings. Mr. Greystone I presume. Please take a seat, we can exchange the pleasantries, and begin. I assure you their is nothing to worry about, this collar prevents me from doing any harm, and, I haven't had any issues in such a long time."

*He pauses in his words, breaths deeply, smiles, and motions for me to sit at the table*

"I'm sorry for my babbling. As you can see I am rather nervous. I have had much time to think over the deeds I have done here in Malton. Most of which, I am not too happy of mind you. With the medication, fantastic doctors, I have been able to uncover most of my past threw my multiple personalities. So how shall we do this?"

"I have to be honest, I am nervous as well, although you are not at all what I expected from the pictures I have seen. A credit to your rehabilitation."

I with my right hand cross over to my left shoulder and lift the strap and take off my leather journal bag, and set it to the floor, open it and begin to take out items and set them on the desk in front of me.

"Do you mind if I record our conversation? I don't want to miss anything, and often times my writing doesn't reflect the emotion so I tend to listen over the conversation and add in the emotional content later. I assume this is alright with you?"

*His hands fumbles with the edge of the table as he sheepishly agrees to the recording*

"When you are ready Matt, we can begin, I wish to make this as comfortable talking to me as possible. I also want to take this time to thank you for meeting with me at this time."

"Your welcome. I would be lying if I said I didn't have a bit of a selfish reason for doing this. I want all to know the real me. The one that suffered as everyone did at that time, and I was, at one point a decent person. I am ready when you are."
