Bentley: I notice that you always nix any alterations that would reduce survivor power or increase zombie abilities. What up with that?--

Re: Well, not always. It's just that the vast, vast majority of suggestions are total crap. As it is, survivors and zombies are pretty evenly balanced right now. Yes, believe it or not, they are. Any serious zombie siege will always win out in the end, of course, because zombies don't have to worry about changing sides when they die...not to mention that little thing called "Ankle Grab." ...And the fact that they don't need to search for ammo for days and days...

Most people's suggestions either want to make sure survivors can't build barricades or ever find ammo, and/or make each and every zombie the equivalent of three or four survivors. Those are both stupidly bad ideas. Any zombie enhancements that directly upgrade their attacks are going to be multiplied a hundredfold in siege situations. One zombie hitting for an extra 5 points each day is nothing; but when it suddenly becomes 5,000 extra points, it seriously matters.

Minor changes can produce extreme results, which is why suggestions need to be very carefully considered.

Also, a lot of the suggestions are bad ideas from a technical aspect. Go read Suggestions Dos and Donts, Keep It Simple (the long one) for my reasons why. I wrote it, and yeah, it could be written better, but hey, it's not like I'm getting paid to explain the difficulties of tracking state on the web, or why recursion is a bad, bad thing.

I also get sick of people whining about how bad headshot is or how overpowered ankle grab is. These people should just deal with it. It's a free game. If they hate it that badly, they can quit playing. My zombie has taken several headshots, and he's managed to level up just fine. Likewise, my survivors have battled zombies that just never go away, and they deal with it too.

Anyway, I should also point out that I nix plenty of survivor suggestions too. Take a look at the ones that basically say "You get XP for doing anything!" and see how many times I've voted kill. It's a lot. I also tend to shoot down sniper rifles, grenades, machine guns, and a lot of other "make survivors superhuman" suggestions too.

So, there you go. Bentley Foss 00:50, 30 Nov 2005 (GMT)
