Basic Info:

  • A monument is a city block containing a statue or similar piece of public art, without a building in it. It is functionally equivalent to a street, except that players with the Tagging skill can gain 2 XP for writing graffiti on a monument.
  • This is, game-play wise, an empty block, and cannot be barricaded.
  • After the July 3, 2009 update, some monuments became tall and can be seen from a distance with binoculars

Description

Humans and zombies alike will see the following (permanent) description when standing in front of the monument:

"You are at the Prior Monument, a bronze statue plastered with quarantine posters."

The Prior Monument is a monument located in the suburb of Pescodside. At the center of this location though is a grand monument to a very important man, although due to a mistake his name may forever remain misspelled. Survivors approaching the monument will notice that it is dedicated to one "Malton Prior", when in fact it should read "Melton Prior".

Melton Prior (1845 - 1910) was far-and-away the best known artist to emerge from the Boer War. He was the Illustrated London News' "special" reporter in South Africa. Of particular note are the illustrations which Prior smuggled out from the besieged town of Ladysmith which served to establish his fame. The method by which they were smuggled out was particularly hazardous and intricate. Prior made his sketches carefully and traced them onto the thinnest paper he had, folded them as small as possible and sent them out with a runner. The runners who undertook this journey left Ladysmith by night, but hid during the day. Under cover of darkness they would either sneak through the lines or join the Africans employed by the Boers. In this way they hoped to escape detection. Once through the lines the runner had to take the envelope down to Colenso, get the receipt from the postmaster, and then return to Ladysmith where he was paid the amount promised on producing the receipt.

As such, Melton Prior was considered a famous figure, which in turn led to his notice by the city council of Malton. The problem arose when, while determining new public works poor penmanship led councilors to believe that Melton Prior was in fact named Malton Prior. This mix-up and one misguided, but unanimous, vote later led to the monument being erected in the name of Malton. When the mistake was later discovered it was quickly silenced to avoid any public embarrassment. To this day no one has ever attempted to correct the mistake although some survivors have, from time to time, employed a well used spray paint can to make their own revisions.

Melton Prior, we survivors salute your enduring spirit of survival in the face of adversity. To this day survivors with Free Running continue to visit the monument and acknoweldge both the man and the men he hired to carry out his work.

Medical Assistance

The Prior Monument does not provide any clinic facilities and is thus not considered to be a clinic. The revivification point does serve as a simple triage area where dead survivors can hope to rejoin the living and thus, the battle. Because of the open nature of the point, members are warned to use the facilities at their own risk should any zombie(s) turn hostile.

Revived patients can head northwest to Blaise General Hospital in Dulston for further attention post-revivification.

Current Events

July 23rd, 2007 - King Murek's Army has claimed the Prior Monument as a revive point. From this day, and probably a while back, KMA will revive any and all zombies standing at this location.
