History

Ashcroft library is a red brick schoolhouse built in 1944 in an attempt to begin rebuilding parts of the city that were devastated by the bombings in 1941. Ashcroft was once a voluntary controlled primary school, but the growing number of students in Shackleville eventually necessitated a larger dedicated building, so the Diamond Lane school was established in 1964. Soon after students migrated over to the new school, Victoria Erskine began work to convert Ashcroft Primary School into what we now know as the Ashcroft Library.
