You are standing outside Lessey Lane Police Department. The building has been very heavily barricaded. Somebody has spraypainted Overbarricading kills onto a wall.

You search and find a torn and bloodstained Mead notebook. The owner probably won't be missing this...

You read the notebook, it appears to be a journal.

Journal of a Scout

December 07 2006

It's raining outside. Wonder if it'll snow.

Call me Gils.

I'm going to keep a journal just because. Frankly, I don't think I'm going to go running around Malton forever. Should I die (and stay dead), escape, or just plain out give up the fight and go underground, this journal will remain behind as... uh, I don't know. Maybe it'll be of help to somebody, a manual for survival. An excerpt of life in Malton to future researchers maybe. Or most likely a moment's worth of distraction before being discarded.

As long as it's read...

Today was alright. I'm looking for a portable generator and a fuel can or two. There's a bunch of hospitals here in Randallbank as well as a PD up in Huntley Heights that I'd like to get powered. Traveling above the streets can still get disorienting from time to time and I couldn't find a factory. Found a couple of zombies though when I did venture outside. Emptied two pistols and a shotgun, but I couldn't manage a kill. Tough bastards, I'll give them that much. Still, I could definitely feel my skill in the shotgun improving. A pity the ammo comes so scarce... among other things. I'll settle for being a pistol ninja.

Went back to "base" and here I am. I'm going to go for a factory run tomorrow as well and see if I can get more ammunition. I've got a lot of guns but precious little bullets. Better get my arms in shape for times like these.

December 09 2006

With the condition of the city as it is, I shouldn't be too surprised that finding anything of worth can be difficult. That doesn't mean I can't curse a blue streak about it. Miraculously, I found a fuel can yesterday. Oh, and a crowbar this morning. That could come in handy in case I find myself trapped outside. I swung it around a bit, pretending to be Gordon Freeman.

I'm going to rest up and then figure out what I'm going to do next. While I'm reasonably safe in my current location, I'm getting impatient. Been here for two days, going on three, a particularly silent guy keeping me company. Not that there's much reason for talking. I'm not sure whether to spend one more day in an all out search for a generator or give up and scrounge for ammunition. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter. Well, I have all day to think on it.

Update: Found a generator mid-afternoon. Hauled ass to the PD and installed it. Now maybe I can get some ammunition after I rest up, I thought, sort of proud of myself. Then I remembered the Necrotech building nearby and wondered if I should have installed one there instead. Damn. What's done is done though. I'll make up for it by looking for another one in a few days. Meanwhile I'm going to take advantage of the generator and stock up.

December 11 2006

I can barely keep myself awake. It's been a frantic day and it's not even the afternoon yet. With the PD powered, I managed to get a sizeable amount of ammunition. That's about it for the good news. Immediately afterward I noticed the Necrotech building and the Roode building next to us, which were lit the day before, had gone dark. What was alarming was that the NT building had been very heavily barricaded not even an hour ago. I made a quick trip over and confimed two zombies and three survivors. The generator had been destroyed. It had managed to last maybe a day. Not long after I came back, a survivor reported that the hospitals south of us had been overrun. It looked like anyone staying was in for a siege.

An attack on our barricades came immediately. I had little strength left, but I managed to at least bring it back up a level. But half an hour later, my work was neutralized. I don't have the energy to fight them if they break in. If this keeps up, I'm jumping overboard, figuratively speaking. With any luck, the other survivors can find enough objects to secure the building.

Update: They broke in while I was out, the generator's gone. On the other hand, some of the survivors have apparently repelled them and re-barricaded. Others managed to clear out the NT building. I dropped in sporadically to keep up the PD's barricades when I could but I'm not very effective without rest. At this rate I knew I'd kill myself before the zombies do. So I bailed after a final reinforcement. Of course this keeps with my policy of never sleeping inside resource buildings, but I'll admit I felt like I was abandoning the survivors. Still, in my condition, all I'm capable of is dying alongside them and I've got no desire to add to the bodycount.

December 12 2006

So much for that. Last night there were a dozen survivors in the Kirby PD. This morning, none. Six bodies, seventeen zombies greeted me when I arrived. I fired blindly into that shambling horde, and can confirm a single kill. Possibly someone who only yesterday helped me defend the place. Not that it really mattered. Without ceremony, I threw the bodies outside the station and retreated. The NT building had two zombies, one body. I should have saved my strength, not to mention my ammo, on them.

Back at "base" I reported the numbers to the three people with me. One of them, a soldier, possibly a medic, described the situation over in Shearbank. The zombies had overrun their staunchest defenses and their NT buildings had fallen. He needed Littlehales cleared. I considered advising him to locate a better populated safehouse, but he looked exhausted. About the best we can do at this point is wait it out and take the fight to them tomorrow. With any luck, some armed passerby will drop by and clear out Littlehales for us. We'd then have to clean and barricade the place. Then another day to get it powered.

But that horde inside the PD is growing. Wouldn't be surprised if there were thirty of them tomorrow. If worse comes to worse, I'm retreating west towards Santlerville. Huntley Heights has effectively become a red zone.

There's another course of action for me to consider. I've heard a news bulletin from the radio, seems one of the largest mass of zombies ever seen is attacking Pitneybank. From what's been reported, the survivors over there are putting up a terrific fight and urging more to join the defense. I'm giving it some thought. Would have to cross through Randallbank and Heytown. Don't know the condition of the former, but heard the latter's relatively safe. A part of me wants to rush there, another part of me says one thing at a time. If I could clear out Littlehales and barricade it I could help these scientists to revive survivors from the aftermath of the Shearbank catastrophe.

Decisions, decisions, but I think this one is clear.

December 14 2006

I was getting attached to the old base. Had to abandon it the day before yesterday. A horde of at least 30 were in the general vicinity of the area and had knocked the barricades low. Caded up and fell back to a safer location. A library no less. I've always liked reading and looters don't seem to care much for books, so at least I wasn't bored. Had a small chat with some survivors, seems Dulston up in the NW is going to be the next target of zombies attacking Pitneybank. One of them was headed up there. Wished him luck. The others were a bit more quiet. One of them I recognized as another scout. Seemed to like knives as he was constantly sharpening them. I've heard about survivors murdering each other but I didn't feel too uneasy. At any rate, I went about my business. Cleared out a bank and caded up to the plan standard. Did the same thing this morning to a hospital. The PD and NT had been cleared by someone else and everything generally looked back to normal.

Tomorrow, will attempt to get a more accurate read on zombie numbers in the area. Seems a group of six is at outside Columbanus Hospital, and other blocks nearby have one. My guess is the majority of the horde has moved on. A factory run is in order as well.

December 16 2006

Back and forth. Littlehales was fine yesterday, Kirby PD was broken into. Today, Littlehales is broken into, and Kirby PD secured. Well. It gets a little discouraging. I think the problem lies in the fact we don't have enough survivors in the vicinity to defend the buildings properly. Barricade all you want but even the strongest barricade is useless without a living person to maintain it.

Today I killed a zombie and dumped some bodies. In other words, nothing new. Don't think anything can surprise outside of death at this point.

Have to clear out Littlehales. Have to power it and the PD. Tomorrow, factory run.

December 17 2006

I'm in a junkyard. It's a heavily barricaded junkyard though and two soldiers, apparently from a group called the Randallbank Coalition, are also there. Aside from one of them wearing what appears to be a bee costume, I'm feeling reassured in their presence. The location looks fairly defensible. All in all perhaps I got lucky.

See, earlier today I was going to hit the old factories for a generator. I had to switch between Randallbank and Roachtown in order to free run. There were a lot of ransacked, abandoned buildings between the two suburbs. No one around but a lonely zombie, swaying mindlessly inside a library, surrounded by broken glass and torn books.

Made it to the factory and searched until I collapsed. No luck. At all. Worse, there were some active zeds. No sooner had I woken from a quick shuteye when I noticed the barricades were weakening. Oh yes, someone or something had taken notice of little old me. This close to the red zone suburb of Roachtown, I wasn't overly surprised, but I figured I shouldn't press my luck. So off I went blindly back up north and managed to make it to this fortified junkyard.

The sheer amount of stuff in the junkyard amazes. You could probably find anything here but it would take you days if you were looking for something specific, say a generator. I don't plan on staying for long if I can help it, it still doesn't feel as safe as a building. Want to head back to Huntley and try the factories there eventually.

January 20 2007

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. A bit belated? Sure. Lots of stuff happened. Like getting employed by Necrotech. I don't know what the deal with them is, exactly. Are they the cause of all this? In retribution for their deeds, they now combat what they created? Whatever the case, they have labs and syringes files with a revivification formula that brings the undead back to life. I've revived about three myself recently, and let me tell you, it feels more satisfying than taking one down with a headshot. That might change eventually but until then...

I'm currently located in Roachtown, a red zone. Before that, I was helping the clean up effort in Shearbank. That place is green now, a survivor haven. For now. It was in Shearbank that some NT scientist took note of me and gave me clearance and information on their labs. With that came experience in advanced First Aid and even some minor surgery skills. I'm almost as good as any combat medic now.

There's a bunch more that happened. A mass zombie suicide, for one... but I'm pretty tired now.

January 29 2007

I've gotten myself acquainted with the malls since the new year. The amount of stuff you can find, ESPECIALLY ammunition is great. At the moment, I'm near Bale in Yagoton. This is of course home to the YRC, or the Yagoton Revivification Clinic. There's a bit of controversy concerning this group of scientists, mainly that they're the ones who inadvertently caused the zombie plague. Another group, the Neon Knights they call themselves, have dedicated themselves to eliminating all YRC members. I understand that the YRC can't easily be forgiven, if they did indeed cause this (though I suspect the truth runs deeper than that). However, they are atoning for their sins. They go amongst the hordes and revive them one by one, even treating those with the advanced rot normal syringes can't work on. While the Knights go about with their petty revenge, the YRC risk their lives for others. I have seen one Knight murder two scientists. If I find him, I will execute him as a traitor to the survivor cause.

This will naturally set me up as their target. I've survived all these months among the undead, and ironically it'll likely be one of the living that'll send me off. Not if I can help it, though.

January 30 2007

The end of January draws near.

No real significance, just felt like mentioning it. The days pass by at a numbing pace. I shoot a few zombies, give a few reports, DNA tag, heal, and maybe a revive in the evening. I think I might be done with Yagoton, I don't know where I'll head after that. I've been seeing some animals in the buildings like a White Tiger, refugees from the zoo I've heard. Seems humans and animals have made a sort of alliance, as unbelievable as it sounds. Call themselves the Malton Zookeepers. For curiosity's sake, I might head over to the zoo and aquarium.

Speaking of amazing things, the zombie mass suicide. A large horde, affectionately referred to as Shacknews for one reason or another, fell upon themselves inside the Brain Museum, way up in Rhodenbank. I don't know the entire story, except that this particular horde did manage to ransack every mall in Malton. With them gone, it can only be a good thing for survivors. Though, even as I say that, a "Mall Tour '07" is gearing up. Seems annually the zombies are of a mind to destroy all malls just like Shacknews. I think they're in Shearbank now, not sure.

If I stick around Yagoton long enough, I'm sure I'll meet up with them.

February 3 2007

Today was cutting it close. I'm not entirely out of the woods yet, either. Sometime in the late morning, I was making my usual rounds outside the Style NT when I found a survivor amidst a pack of some 9 zombies. I administered a quick first aid treatment and then covered his retreat. Took down one zed swiftly. Another particularly stubborn one managed to trap me in a corner and decided to go toe to toe. It got the better of me, but just barely. I beat a hasty retreat and collapsed. I got some thanks from the survivor and a bit of first aid treatment of my own from another. I'm still hurting bad, but at least there's no infection. Not zombie infection anyway. Y'see, it seems I've caught a cold. The weather has been getting chillier and today's exertions didn't help. Think I'll have to stay put a while here. I'm getting the shivers now, don't think I can hold my pen for much longer so I'll sign off here.

UPDATE: Whew. Thanks to a kindly scientist, it looks like I'm back in action. For the moment. Still got a cold though.

February 4 2007

WELL. I'm ok. Even that cold seems to have retreated. Maybe I was just feeling under the weather. Cut it close that time but everything turned out well enough. Tired though. The cold seems to seep through my bones. I try to sleep near the radiators. Read a newspaper, advising survivors to lay down their arms and welcome their new zombie overlords. Sounded just a bit silly, but then, the fact there are humans who believe this and are actively working towards it... just adds to my shivers. Cults.

DAMN IT'S COLD. Should sleep.

February 12 2007

Shearbank's under attack so I went there a few days back. Just doing the usual things, barricading, killing, reviving, etc. A certain zombie kept trying to speak to me today. First time that's happened. I suppose some zombies still possess enough... will, perhaps, to restrain themselves from attacking humans in the hope of a revive. Peculiar. Anyway, I did a DNA check and injected him. Don't know where he is right now, but I'm assuming he's well enough. I'm inside a library. Bunch of eccentrics hanging out here. Seem like ok people for the most part. Looks like a trip to the zoo will be postponed a little longer. I sure am tired these days...

February 15 2007

...I'm not long for this world. Someone over barricaded Saint Christopher's Church which I had been using as an entry point only a minute before. Ashamed to say I panicked a bit, but, the noises they make...

Long story short, I used the last of my strength to flee south and there I sit, waiting for the inevitable. If only... if only I used my crowbar... I might have... well, that's neither there nor here. I just hope ...

Well, didn't take them long. Two of 'em and I got one bullet left.

Here we go.

You are standing outside Lessey Lane Police Department. The building has been very heavily barricaded. You can find now way to enter. Somebody has spraypainted Overbarricading kills onto a wall.

The journal comes to an abrupt end at this point.

You are inside Club Meatyard, in the near-darkness of the main dancefloor. The building has been extremely heavily barricaded. A dented portable generator has been set up here. It is out of fuel, and connected to a powered-down radio transmitter. Somebody has spraypainted Home sweet home onto a wall.

Searching the building, you find a book. It is filled with various poetry. In between the pages you find a scrap of paper. It appears to be a single journal entry.

You read the paper.

Journal of a Scout -Addendum

April 21 2007

It's me, Gils. To say I've been interrupted would be an understatement of proportions most epic. Dying, reviving, killing, being killed, and so on and so forth.

I think I'm going to hunker down here for a while, this Club Meatyard. I think I've earned a bit of R&R. Read some books, take it easy. There's two libraries nearby. Yep, think of it as a semi-retirement.

Just felt bad that old journal ended on such a depressing note, so I made this little addendum. If you wanna know the backstory, you'll have to scour Shearbank, specifically the Lessey Lane PD. I'm sure that old notebook is still there somewhere.

...I wish I had more to say but honestly, words just don't seem sufficient at this point. In the end, I guess I just want it known that I was here. Heh.

Well, Gils here, signing off.

P.S. I did in fact manage to visit the Zoo! Nice place.
