As time drew on, our leaders started to feel the strain. They didn't have that glossy, charismatic posture any more. Their faces grew pasty, slouching now and then, sighing at some failed operation or another. They didn't want to accept that they may have to step down as the leader of an organization. Some even realised that if they were to give up, and stay dead, their band of survivors wouldn't stay together, that they were the only ones holding a fragile community together.
There are many that have forgotten their roots -had to, most of them- but still trudge on. Those with a strong hierarchy are the ones that survive after the "retirement" of a leader. Some of the larger groups have "councils" that decide on what they plan to do next.
Some have come back from the other side, not with memory exactly, but they can recognize some big players in the hordes that knock on our doors. It's a strange phenomenon known as Rebirth Memory. Before this, we just imagined them as a shambling horde without direction, but now we know that they too have commanders, with a purpose. It's a ghastly thought, and one that many seek to deny.
