One of the oldest and wealthiest families in Malton, the Curton family made its fortune during the Industrial Revolution, providing iron and coal for virtually all of northern England. The progenitor of this family line, Mortimer Curton, was known to be very secretive about his wealth and had invested huge amounts of money in governmental ventures, private industries, and even colonial endeavors.
Mortimer Curton was credited with designing and overseeing the construction of Curton Mansion in the city of Malton.
