Richard Curton
One of the oldest and wealthiest families in Malton, the Curton family made its fortune during the Industrial Revolution, providing iron and coal for virtually all of northern England.
Through the next several generations, the family grew, as did their wealth. Richard Curton, the great-grandson of Mortimer, took the family’s power one step further by becoming Mayor of Chancelwood, serving for over 20 years. During this time, the family also secured numerous plots of land in the city, leasing the land to various businesses and amassing political clout at the same time.
Richard Curton was responsible for the expansion of the original Curton Mansion as well as the development of an improved underground sewage system in Chancelwood.
Rumour suggests that Curton wished to be a philanthropist and contributed the original endowment to the St. Wolfgang's Hospital. This has neither been refuted nor confirmed, and a solid decision is unlikely.
