B-GL-2-2: Radio Transmitter Operator (RTO)

The following is a DRAFT of a basic guide for new Radio Transmitter Operators (RTOs), subject to change/review.

The RTO: Apex of the Communication Chain

The Regiment has an extensive Communication Chain to keep everyone in-the-know and effective. You, the RTO, is at the Apex of this communication chain. It is your job to make sure that information and orders flow accurately and in a timely manner.

Your Duties...

As a Part of the Communication Chain

You are the destination of all information. You must make sure that all information you receive is pushed back down the chain using the radio network, selecting the right frequency for the job. Maybe command-related issues should be transmitted on Command Tactical while general team reports should be transmitted on General Tactical. YOU must use common sense and choose the right frequency for the job.

As a Part of Command

As the mission progresses, battlefield situation will change. When situation changes drastically, you should send appropriate directions to address it while staying true to the CO's intent for the mission. For example, if a fire team engaged in a 3-tier mission asks for confirmation after completing stage 1, you should tell them to proceed with Stage 2. Or if a team is in extreme danger, maybe you should send a retreat order if the CO hasn't had the chance to issue such an order himself. You must be the reflex in the command nervous system.

As a Technician

As the RTO, you are not only responsible for using the radio network, but installing and maintaining it as well. You should be carrying the Complete RTO Kit composed of:

  • 1 Generator
  • 1 Radio Transmitter
  • 1 Fuel Can (at least)
  • 4 Hand-held Radio, enough to cover all frequencies used by the Regiment - 27.00 MHz, General Tactical, Command Tactical, and Local Frequency.

You should have these items at all times so that an HQ with a fully-operable radio can be deployed at any time. In your spare time, you should constantly be restocking, and be refuelling the generator running your radio.

Conclusion

As the RTO, you have a heavy responsibility. Your activity will largely determine how quickly orders and information flow through the communication chain, and consequently determine whether the mission fails or succeed. Your fellow Regimental's lives are in your hands.
