You hardly know the guy, so you clueless of how he will react if ever he finds his way back to the group—and learns that you had gotten back (mostly) on your own. You figure he will at least be pleased that Doug is still around (if Doug survives). But Volker could be another story.
He is part of the military, probably "knows things," and will likely stay with you to the end.
