You are inside a classroom of Pridmore Way School, a middle school. Wooden panels have been fitted into window frames, made to block interior light and movement. Mattresses, cushions, blankets, and dirty fabrics function as sleeping arrangements.
Names have been written across the whiteboard, resembling a guestbook. Part of it is smeared.
- You read the note, and your eyes strain in the poor light. The note structure, the writing style, it is very familiar. You recall the one left when you washed ashore, on Black River, in the boathouse. It is very likely the same person, except this note looks written earlier in their journey. They forgot to sign here too––probably chronic.
- to the reader of this note,
- I have attempted a precisely southern direction from where I started but yet I am precisely east from where I departed, so I may say completely that I have not gone precisely south but in another direction, just on another degree of angle, and still I am going arbitrarily somewhere, and I may indeed try south from here properly this time.
- I do plan on actually going south, so I leave this note to you, my reader, whoever you are, with the purest of intentions that I am indeed going south and not at an angle whatever, but straight, not curved, diverging only short distances to remove myself from the path of an object, hence, basically south. and not east.
- it should hopefully come to your mind the question: why is it that I go south? for south I go, from this brief respite, but from east I come accidentally… and I have no real account for as to why, when the radio speaks everyday it says go this way or that way, contradicting itself from one day to the next, sometimes saying even, 'go up, look up, safety is in the sky!' which is absurd. from then on I knew it was useless, so I picked a direction, went another, and now I soon go the one I previously intended. there should supposedly be a river, and from there, I'd take it downstream to the way out, or if downstream leads back the way in, then I will be taken there instead, and become dead. kind regards,
- You stop reading. Will you meet their dead body one day? You put the note back into the drawer and close it.
