Rotate URLs

Timestamp: 03:00, 29 July 2006 (BST)
Type: anti bot measure
Scope: bots
Description: as it stands correctly, you can manually enter this into the URL section of the browser to barricade a building:
http://www.urbandead.com/map.cgi?barricade

Users can create bots that take advantage of this by creating programs that enter this URL automatically. Bots cannot however, manually press the buttons on the browser, which is the usual way to barricade a building. To prevent this kind of abuse, the URL prouced by pushing a button could be rotated every 24 hours or so, maybe on a set schedule or something so Kevan wouldn't have to constantly change it manually; this would force bot users to constantly rework their programs, and hopefully make it harder for them to cheat.

  3. Keep - It's still quite easy to program a bot to look for the address and so on. So I don't know how much this would help, but we might as well make the botters work for what they want. On a side note how would this affect a user who loaded the page just before the URL changed? - Jedaz 03:06, 29 July 2006 (BST)
  4. Kill - I'm sorry, but I have to tell you that from a technical standpoint, this is a very bad idea. Consider this: User A logs on to Urban Dead. Just before he presses the barricade button, the command changes. He presses the button, and is penalized for doing so. I like the spirit, but the idea is broken. –Bob Hammero ModTAC 03:07, 29 July 2006 (BST)
  5. Kill - As Bob. I can't see this being too hard to find a way around for bot writers, either. --A Bothan Spy Mod WTF U! 03:09, 29 July 2006 (BST)
