Kymac was a member of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit assigned to 'clean up the mess' made in the incident of the Black Mesa Research Facility. He quickly became appalled at the brutal killing of the scientist civilians he was expected to carry out at the facility. After his squad ventured to deep within the facility, and became separated from the rest of the soldiers, they allied with a group of scientists attempting to barricade themselves from the attacking creatures and soldiers in an office. They were able to escape from the Black Mesa Research Facility, and then formed the new Black Mesa organization.
