Saving Sassie

once upon a time ... Calvert Mall had fallen to the horde, and me with it ... gunfire, screams mingling with groans ... and death.

i walked, lurched, limped away from the wreckage - made it to a quiet spot, wondering if I'd ever breathe again, feel my own heartbeat.

an age passed, probably only minutes, but time is odd when you're a corpse...

then suddenly, a stirring in the shrubbery! A lanky soldier in faded camo approached warily;

i lifted a hand and tried to speak, but all i could say was:

"Mrh?"

then everything went black, but i awoke in sunshine, alive, only just, but alive!
