Have you given much thought to the impact these images have on dial-up users? If a majority of wiki pages have 30+kb images as headers, it could make things annoying for them. So far these layouts are far from ubiquitous, and a lot of the images are in the 15kb range (a good target size), but a few are pretty porky - notably the one for your own page, and the one for current events. For some images, JPG can give nearly as good image quality as PNG, with much smaller file sizes.
