History

Situated in the south-west fringes of Malton, in the Suburb of Foulkes Village, the old Whittard Road Fire Station [0, 85] sits quietly now, an eerie and vandalized shell of itself. Where once firetrucks gleamed and strong men played cards over strong coffee waiting for the next call, now waits only shadowy halls covered in frantic scrawl, cracked windows through which the fog of night slithers, and a crypt-like silence broken irregularly by the occasional survivor's ragged breath, or scream of horror. A peppering of pockmarks against the North wall tell of bullets fired in an untrained spray. A pile of cement-filled barrels, once used as a safeguard to keep the trucks from rolling while in park, have been gathered into a modest barricade before the doors. But they show signs of having been smashed aside by clawing hands, then reset, innumerable times.

Rumor in the south-west suburbs is that at night, when the moon is high, strange sounds sometimes emanate from the station's upper floors: more than one survivor has shunned the place even in dire straights for fear that it's haunted. It is said, though, that the highest windows provide an unparalled view across the treetops of nearby Alsoop Park to the Foulkes Village Freeguard Building: viewing the sunrise through the Freeguard radio tower's scaffold is said to be epiphanic.

Recently, the building has come under the protection of the Crew Avenue Police Department, and is in use as an overflow shelter for survivors.
