The wiki has now been rolled back to February the 18th with all subsequent edits reapplied to it through an export/import - thanks to User:LeakyBocks for orchestrating the switchover. ==New Update==
Looks like we've been bumped up to MediaWiki 1.23.6. I'm seeing quite a few broken images (looks like ones that are being resized). I'm also seeing a number of odd graphical elements that are clearly out of place (e.g. the "Summary:" under the edit box is taller than it should be, extending up into the edit box). Plus, there are all of the things that are just plain different than they were before. 15:52, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
:I just posted to Talk:Main Page‎, feel free to move discussion here if this seems a better place.
:The thumbnail problem was something I fixed a short while ago, so you might just be seeing it on cached pages - if it's still around, give me a link. The interface layout oddities might just be the fact that we're using a very old skin template on a modern wiki: if switching to a different skin in Special:Preferences fixes all the glitches, then maybe it's time to work up a new skin from scratch. --Kevan (talk) 16:13, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
::Talk:Main Page works. And yeah, I think most of the graphical issues are related to just needing an update to the default theme, as you said, which should be fairly trivial. Sysops might even have access to that via System Messages. I'd have to check. 18:10, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

Stealthexternallink

Karek said:
Fairly certain this was a user made CSS change, it is not present in the new CSS import from MediaWiki that came with the update.

I think you're right about it not being present in the import but it has since been added back to common.css. It works fine now with skins other than default. ~Vsig.png 22:10, 22 April 2011

Ok, probably a waste of time but ok. Every time we update, however rarely, this will continue be an issue. Seems like it'd be simpler just to try and keep up with MediaWiki's version of it but hell, whatever works. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 22:30, 22 April 2011 (BST)
I'm really not against changing all stealth externals to plainlinks if we can isolate them. I've already begun on some of my projects. I just don't want it to turn into "we don't need to worry about urbandead skin because we fixed all the class id issues". I'm also not all that confident in the new search just yet. When looking for townBox yesterday, search didn't even find your user page. Stealthexternal is a popular id and some are likely to slip past. ~Vsig.png 23:49, 22 April 2011
Start at templates: and move down by namespace? Also, we can fit stealthexternal and such into Mediawiki:urbandead.css, so long as you can explain what the visual differences are from what it used to be I'm sure we can figure out how to fix them but, there shouldn't actually be any with the current version. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 04:58, 23 April 2011 (BST)
I'll give it a go. There are quite a few things, though. RC looks totally different. Red exclamation marks for non-patrolled pages (sysop only) are screwy. Gray boxes at the bottom of uncategorized pages. That's to name a few. ~Vsig.png 17:11, 23 April 2011
The gray boxes probably has something to do with the lack of a .js for the urbandead skin and possibly the lack of code for hiding it in common.js if I had to guess. It's for Categories but the other skins don't show it when it's not in use afaik(I use MonoBook pretty exclusively). Don't know about the RC issue without having buttans. --Karekmaps 2.0?! 02:48, 24 April 2011 (BST)

Some sort of an update yesterday?

The wiki was down a few hours yesterday for maintenance, and following that, it appears that some of the data may have been corrupted ever-so-slightly. For instance, every single em dash ("—") I've seen has been replaced with "—", including in the history of the pages. It's a simple matter of fixing it, and I've already replaced a few templates where em dashes appear, but we'll likely need to be on the lookout for more stuff that has changed. Aichon 16:46, 19 February 2014 (UTC)

My games are an inconsistent mess. Sigh. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 19:38, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
Looks like additional characters were added all over the pace. Hundreds, probably thousands, of broken links. Its proper fucked. Look as Sexual Harrison's user page, The Fortress Recruit ad, and any page that has Yonnua Kopponen's signature for just a few hundred examples. ~Vsig.png 04:36, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
Looks like that's because "‎" is inserting itself into seemingly random places where previously there was either a space or no text at all. I actually first saw the issue because my signature was screwed up. Anyway, I'm just correcting the issues as I see them. Umbrella Corporation had a piece of hover text that was screwed up too. Might be worth making an announcement on the wiki news. Aichon 04:51, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Also, what the hell do we do with this? Aichon 06:34, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Uh, pretend we didn't see it. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 15:18, 20 February 2014 (UTC)
I'm with AHLG. Maybe a notice at the top by a sysop that points to this conversation and on the off chance they come back to the wiki, they can fix it accordingly. Also, I'm not sure this has anything to do with this, but since when did UDWiki have a skin named swearcheck? I don't recall ever seeing it. It just appears to be a Vector based skin and doesn't seem to do anything special. ~Vsig.png 01:57, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

Oh that's what was I'd thought I just went insane :P --Storm 02:21, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

The DangerReport system seems affected, but I'm not familiar enough with it to tackle the problem right now. Examples: Shuttlebank#Resource Locations and User:DangerReport/DangerCenter. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:16, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

Well I guess it's this. I'm not sure what kind of symbol ▋is supposed to be. I can't remember what things looked like before. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:20, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
▋ is ▋. That's what it's supposed to be. ;) Anyway, I'm on it. Got the DangerReports mostly working again for the stuff you pointed out. Working on DangerCenter now. Aichon 22:26, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
Okay, dealt with the stuff you linked. I'll poke around some more in the system to see if there's anything else, but I at least got everything I saw on the pages you linked and the immediately related templates. Aichon 23:02, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

We probably need to figure out this one for him, since his sig is templated and all over the place. Aichon 00:17, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

A long time ago in a wiki far, far away... there once was this thing (╯°□°)╯ ┻━┻ --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 00:29, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Nice. Very nice. Also, there's a redirect at ◆◆◆ which used to be at ◆◆◆, but I can't reach ◆◆◆ since the wiki insists on trying capitalize it to —†â—†â—†. Do you happen to remember what the trick was to reach unreachable pages? Aichon 00:35, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
I'm a bit confused about which page you're referring to. What's the page linking to? Hitting the edit tab and editing the URL worked for these. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 00:56, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
Sorry about the confusion. It appears that the links I made go to the wrong page, despite the wikicode being correct. Ugh.
Basically, I was looking at what pages link to DSS Red Zone Support, and I noticed this on the What Links Here page. See how it's spelled as "◆◆◆" and exists as a redirect? I believe it's a redirect that was formerly at ◆◆◆. Unfortunately, if you try to visit it or link it, the wiki replaces it with a redlink to —†â—†â—† instead, since the wiki insists on trying to capitalize the first "â".
I was afraid that the trick you linked was the one we used in the past, since I had already tried it and had no success. The wiki insists on taking me to —†â—†â—† when I enter "◆◆◆" in the URL bar. All I want to do is move the redirect at ◆◆◆ back to ◆◆◆, but the only way to change the source page when doing an admin move action is to feed in the source page from the URL...which means it gets auto-capitalized as —†â—†â—†. So, yeah, a bit annoying. I'll probably just make a new redirect at ◆◆◆ for the DSS at this point, since it's beginning to look like we may not be able to get to the actual ◆◆◆ page to move it to where it should go. Aichon 15:48, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

And this one too. Guh. Aichon 00:48, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Actually, got that one. Aichon 00:49, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Something I just noticed is that the search index seems to not be updating itself until after the page gets visited. That is, you can do a search for a term like "•", get no results, visit a page that happens to have "•" on it, and then re-run the search to get that page as a result. As such, without a bot, there's no way we can clean this up. We really will be finding these things for years to come, but I think we can get the worst of them, thankfully. For instance, I think I figured out a different way to find all of Yonn's wayward sigs, by using the what links here page for the errant page they all link to. Aichon 16:26, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

I fixed the Piñata errors except for the 4 remaining locked pages. I hope this helps, I will (sporadically) continue fixing the other errors too. --wez 10:09, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Has anyone considered asking Kevan if this can be fixed? Maybe he doesn't even know of the problem. Or has anyone found if this is a known problem with MediaWiki? ~Vsig.png 06:45, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
We can see that the Apache, Wiki, PHP and MySQL versions are out of date, so I am not sure if this was update related. I mean why would they have updated to an old stable version? Regardless the cause, you have a good point to inform Kevan first before we get (more) carried away with fixing these - I was struggling on the broadband a bit ;) --wez 12:51, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
My guess is that it wasn't an update, so much as merely a transfer of the db data from one server to another as he switched hosts. Hence the corruption issues in encoding. Anyway, I haven't contacted him. Aichon 15:15, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Admin Pages vs this page

Would you prefer pages needing sysop action be posted here or on the related admin page? There's a few protected pages that need links fixed and some more moves that are needed? Maybe a project page is in order, since this seems to be a pretty huge undertaking. ~Vsig.png 06:45, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Moving all of this to a project page seems like it makes sense. Let's (one of you guys, I'm at work) do that, then ping Kevan just in case he might be interested in helping. And I'd rather just have the stuff listed here than on an admin page. Let's just do a one-time request on an admin page, since I'd rather not deal with editing admin pages as much as this page is getting edited. Aichon 15:15, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Ok, but fair warning, left to me, the project will be called Project:Ragnarok or something. If you're all cool with that, I'll get it set up. ~Vsig.png 16:40, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Alright, here you go. I went with sort of a Spambit Hunters feel, since it should be somewhat fun I guess. Probably add some participation templates or something at a later time. Hopefully not necessary if Kevan can do some behind the scenes fix of some sort. ~Vsig.png 03:54, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Feel free to edit my comment to add any others you find, that way we can keep this useful for later wiki editors who stumble upon these issues and wonder what the original was supposed to be. I'm basing most of this off of AHLG's ongoing work. Aichon 06:17, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

This list might come in handy, although it unfortunately doesn't cover every special character. Maybe someone else can find more of the same. With a complete list, fixing the wiki could be a simple bot job. -- Spiderzed 17:00, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

Rollback solution

Moving a thread from UDWiki talk:Project Ragnarök: yes, the wiki was moved across to a different server in late February, and I was made aware yesterday that differences between the two servers had caused some encoding errors on this wiki.

Sadly it looks like the cleanest way to resolve this will involve reverting the wiki to how it was on February 18th - all edits, uploads, account creations/bans and everything made since the morning of the 18th would be rolled back. I (or any admin who wants to step up) should be able to use Special:Export to export every page listed on Recent Changes since then, and import it again afterwards - worst case we'd just be left with a pile of XML that couldn't be imported but could be restored manually, and since a large number of edits since the upgrade look to have been people cleaning up encoding errors manually, this may not actually amount to much.

I'll wait for some feedback before going ahead - any thoughts? --Kevan 10:31, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm strongly in favor of the rollback, and would actually suggest that those of us here come to a decision quickly, since the longer we wait, the more work it'll be.
Near as I can tell, there have been no bans or new users since before the server move (quick aside: thanks for whatever spam or CAPTCHA updates you put in a few months back, Kevan, since they've made our lives a lot easier), have only been 26 uploads we'd need to redo, and most of the edits (besides encoding ones) are DangerReports, which by their very nature are ephemeral and would not be a major loss if we didn't bother exporting/importing them. Aichon 16:11, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Agreed. Even though I am no sysop nor have authoritative power here, as a user of this wiki I feel a rollback would be less painful than bashing out the quirky characters.
If the worst case does happen (Loki forbid), I will stick around if help is needed recreating or editing the outdated pages. --wez 18:10, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
I am a sys-op, and I agree with the rollback plan. We could use the already existing Category:Pages to Preserve to make it easy to find pages in need of exporting and importing. All what we would need is a definitive point in time for the rollback, so that a.) we can save the pages as late as possible rather than to juggle revisions of different age and b.) inform users of staying away from major edits to be on the safe side. -- Spiderzed 18:52, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
On 2nd thought, this category contains a lot of old administrative archives that haven't been updated in ages and that we want in a good state, rather than in a mangled one. A new category serving a similar purpose as Category:Pages to Preserve would probably be best. -- Spiderzed 19:02, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Categorizing pages to export is a good solution. I was the one to create the above category, and used it to export several pages we wanted to save from the last history purge. Special:Export allows you to expot all pages from a given category. As an added bonus, the rollback should remove the category from those pages when it is complete.
Kevan, while we have your attention, there is another minor issue created by the server switch. The game is now hosted at a new IP, but as you can see, the images are using the old IP. Not sure if this will autocorrect eventually or if they'll need to be manually changed. The in-game images, like streets also have the same problem. It's really only a problem if you use the IP to play UD, as I sometimes do to bypass content filters >.> ~Vsig.png 20:06, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
Special:Export can take a list of articles. The only ones we'd have to export and import would be the ones that have actually changed since the server switch, which we can get from Recent Changes. The way to do it would be to lock the wiki against updates, export, rollback and then import, which means it won't actually become more work the longer it goes on - I'll put wheels in motion over the next day or so. The wiki will be down for an hour or two when it happens, as there's a lot of database to roll through. --Kevan 20:27, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
I have created Category:Hoddmimis Holt to mark pages with important updates past February 18. I will now go through recent changes. If I miss anything, everyone shall feel free to slap it on themselves. -- Spiderzed 21:07, 5 March 2014 (UTC)

I just posted to Talk:Main Page‎, feel free to move discussion here if this seems a better place.
The thumbnail problem was something I fixed a short while ago, so you might just be seeing it on cached pages - if it's still around, give me a link.
Talk:Main Page works. And yeah, I think most of the graphical issues are related to just needing an update to the default theme, as you said, which should be fairly trivial. Sysops might even have access to that via System Messages. I'd have to check. Aichon 18:10, 5 November 2014 (UTC)
