| Tarumigan Gistarai joined the ranks of Ackland Mall Security as a green recruit to the world of Malton, and ended up becoming Strike Team Commander (and later overall Commander) of Ackland Mall Security in a career that spanned several years. He was present for several momentous battles in Maltonian history, including the LUE attacks on Ackland, Hildebrand, and Caiger Malls. Despite this, he somehow managed to avoid getting eaten by LUE...a fact which seems to entertain LUE to no end and is personified in the famous (and now-missing) picture of an active Tarumigan sprinting through a ruined mall-quad with an equally-active LUE horde yelling, "Only I would be stupid enough to enter a mall quad with a hundred active zombies inside!".
| | I rose to prominence in the Second Age of Burgundy (a far longer epoch than the better-known Third Age, known also as the Reckoning of Mantooth). My career can be summed up thusly: |
|
| |
|
| | #I worked for Darnell Heighs Police and found plenty of zombies to battle, but no beer. |
| | #I worked for Club Kick as a bouncer and found plenty of beer, but no zombies to battle. |
| | #I broke into Ackland Mall Security's office and stole their beer and battled their zombies. |
| | #On my way out of the Mall, celestial trumpets sounded, and an angelic host descended from the heavens bearing lances of flame to purge the zombie threat and to gift me with the very hammer of Thor Himself. |
| | #Unfortunately, the Hammer of Thor was stolen by fel minions of the wretched Mantooth...I had imbibed too much beer at the time. |
| | |
| | On that day, I established the Creed, the law by which any upstanding citizen of Malton should live and die. Thus speaks Tarumigan: |
| | |
| | #Mantooth has defiled the Hammer of Thor. For this arrogance he shall be delivered unto the mercy of the Gods and endure an age of torment at the hands of Xyxzyix, the Insane Haunter of the Forbidden Word with A Thousand Thousand Spawn and Infinite Hands. I have spoken. |
| | #The Hammer shall be purified in the blood of the zombie, wretched spawn of Mantooth, and then shall be returned to its' rightful place on the Holy Tool Rack of Ackland Mall. I have spoken. |
| | #The beer shall flow. I have spoken. |
| | #Suffer not the zombie. I have spoken. |
| | #The zombie must never, ever be suffered. There are no exceptions. I have spoken. |
| | #If the zombie is amusing, then it may be suffered. I have spoken. |
| | #Those who would aid in the return of the Hammer of Thor shall find absolution in Glorious Combat. I have spoken. |
| | #Conversely, those who would serve Mantooth shall share his torment at the hands of Xyxzyix, the Insane Haunter of the Forbidden yadda yadda yadda... |

| == Am I a Coward? ==
| |
| | |
| I've been getting the charge of cowardice leveled against me since the Second Siege of LUE (Life, the Universe, and Everything), when I tried to evacuate Ackland Mall rather than sticking around and fighting LUE. Having been inside Ackland Mall the first time LUE came knocking, I knew quite well that the chances of repelling such a large and organized horde in the Mall were nil.
| |
| | |
| The attempt to evacuate was a disaster for reasons that are beyond the scope of this article. Most of the Mall's population remained inside Ackland and were subsequently devoured by the LUE horde. Approximately 30 persons followed my instructions, and we managed to survive the attack. My reputation has never recovered, however. The charge of cowardice has been coming more frequently of late.
| |
| | |
| The fact is, I've fought before. Hard. LUE was, quite possibly, the single most powerful, most lethal zombie horde in Urban Dead history. I fought them at Ackland, Caiger, and Hildebrand Malls. I shadowed them across Malton and tried repeatedly to defeat them. I ran into their entire group during the Caiger Mall siege WHILE THEY WERE ONLINE, ATTACKING. Despite all this, I managed to stay alive when they killed hundreds upon uncounted hundreds of others. That doesn't sound like someone who is afraid to give battle. I've learned, however, that it is best to pick your fights. If the situation is bad, it's better to melt away and regroup somewhere else, rather than conduct the heroic and ultimately suicidal "last stand". Those survivors crazy enough to hold their ground until the last pistol shot shouldn't be surprised to find themselves lying in a pile of corpses beneath the feet of a victorious zombie horde. You can call that cowardice if you like. I call it fighting smarter, not harder. The fact remains, I survive tremendously huge disasters routinely because I know when to run and when to shoot.

| == Official Record ==
| |
| | |
| Tarumigan Gistarai is a soldier and police officer, or at least he was before this entire city descended into madness. He's been here since the beginning, dodging murderers and zombies and carving out an existence for himself in the tortured, crumbling streets of Malton. He fought for a very long time by himself until his footsteps carried him to the barricaded doors of Ackland Mall in the company of one Dr. Jennifer Carreira, a former Necrotech scientist who has told him much about the origins of the outbreak. The extent of his knowledge about Necrotech's activities in Malton is uncertain, but he clearly knows more than he speaks of.

| '''Exile From Ackland Mall Security'''
| |
|
| |
| ''Important Note! This section is written by Tarumigan, and thus represents Tarumigan's point of view.''
| |
|
| |
| ''''I first wish to note something very, very clearly. I know that my evacuation of Ackland Mall during the Second LUE Siege angered many, as did the subsequent split in the AMS hierarchy. It was never my intention to do so. It was also not my intention to flee indefinitely, nor was I being a coward. I withdrew from Ackland and tried to bring the whole Mall with me. I wanted to make a stand at Brennand NT and defy LUE's power. When that plan failed, I did what I could to save those who had come with me, and had some success.
| |
|
| |
| '''I have fought long and hard for the Acklanders. They may have disliked my methods, but they should never have questioned my resolve or dedication. It was I who marched to Hildebrand to fight the LUE there. It was I who led the strike team to Caiger to resist LUE's attack on it. I must have done something right, for I enjoy the paradox of respect amongst my enemies.
| |
| ''
| |
| '''For those of you who dislike me because of what I did, I ask for understanding. Not forgiveness, for there is nothing to forgive. But I did what I had to, and I saved thirty lives because of it. For that, I paid with my career in the only organization that mattered to me, an organization I still reflect on fondly.'''''
| |
|
| |
| After a long term of service with Ackland Mall Security, Tarumigan was ousted in what might be described as a power struggle between the AMS old guard and the newer faces of Tarumigan's bloc. The struggle revolved around Tarumigan's authority within the group in general, but it was touched off by an acute incident...the Second Siege of Ackland Mall by the LUE horde.
| |
|
| |
| Prior to the siege, Tarumigan became aware of the approach of the horde and, realizing that the Mall's population was insufficient to withstand the attack, he ordered Ackland Mall's evacuation unilaterally without consulting the rest of AMS. In his defense, the evacuation order was issued less than 24 hours prior to the assault on the Mall...it is questionable if there was sufficient time for a broad-ranging discussion of policy amongst AMS Command. AMS officials subsequently countermanded his order, leading to general confusion amongst the civilian population. Ultimately, about 30 of those who fled with Tarumigan survived the Mall's collapse. This event touched off a running argument between Tarumigan and other AMS officers as they disagreed on the strategy to retake the Mall. Ultimately, Tarumigan was fired as Strike Team Commander. He protested this decision and was re-instated by popular vote. Two weeks after the vote, he was again fired...this time in defiance of the vote. He was subsequently kicked out of AMS and banned from their forums. This led to a temporary exile from Havercroft, a permanent exile from AMS, and the general dissolution of AMS as considerable numbers of officers resigned in protest over the actions of AMS Administration.
| |
|
| |
| He has since signed on with AMS ally "The Crimson Clan" to continue his service in the Havercroft region. The longer term impact of the firing has been devastating for AMS. AMS lost some of its' most visible members in the ensuing exodus. In addition, the alliance with the Crimson Clan was shaken, and the alliance with the Malton Bounty Emo Killers group was altogether severed. Whether AMS will survive this turbulence remains to be seen.
