History
The Rainey Hotel, so called because of it's unique roof which was designed to not actually be there, was built and opened in 1996 by a Mr Gary Coupland as the Star Hotel. He was, according to locals, a complete and utter fruitcake who thought that people would pay to sleep in a hotel with no roof. Surprisingly, he was actually right and over it's first summer (which was unnaturally warm with sunshine for 4 weeks straight) in business, it became the most heavily booked hotel in town. People liked to sleep under the stars, but didn't want to trek out into the country and lie in a field. So they fancied a hotel with no roof instead.
After that summer, however, it rained non-stop for 2 months. Unfortunately for Gary, no-one wanted to stay in a sopping wet hotel with no roof and he eventually had to close. He had spent his life savings on building the hotel and as a result was left totally bankrupt. His wife left him and Gary was reduced to living on the streets. He spent the final years of his life living in the hotel, under the stars (and rain) before he decided he wanted peace and drowned himself in the fountain out front.
Ironically, he then rose as a zombie when a strain of the Maltonian zombie virus reached Borehamwood.
