Description

The Elsworth, as depicted by former pupil 'Fingers' Finlay. Finlay is the central figure in red, pickpocketing a fellow pupil; to the right is the top-hatted figure of Mr Morrisette, the loathed schoolmaster.

A small building, its doorway flanked by statues.

History

A former public primary school, during the 1970s Elsworth Square School was transformed into a secondary school and college of further education, as the teenage population of Foulkes Village expanded. The red brick of the original edifice was clad in concrete, in keeping with 70s aesthetics, but much of this cladding has fallen away through disrepair, revealing the Victorian architecture in its former glory.

The school is best known as the alma mater of 'Fingers' Finlay, who took a BTEC in Car Maintenance and subsequently hot wired and joyrode nearly every car in the staff car park prior to stripping them in his place of business. Finlay went on to be a major player in the modern development of Foulkes Village, to the horror of many 'Old Foulkes'. On the plus side, Finlay was the nemesis of the detested Mr Morrisette, a humourless martinet who was alleged to torment weaker pupils mentally and physically with his sarcasm and malacca cane.

A more popular 'Old Elsworthian' was 'Buffy' Dwyer, who left the school aged 10 having mastered the three Rs: Readin', Writin', and Runnin' Away.
