AsylumThe man now known as "SM" is but one person in a friendship known as House of Asylum. Members of this friendship were once companions, but the onslaught of zombies has spread scattered them to the corners of Malton. Left on their own, the friends lived their separate lives. Some fell to corrupted ways and others worked tirelessly for what they believed was a good cause. So you wonder...do they remember each other? If they crossed each other in a hospital, a mall, a darkened bank, would they stick together? No one knows the answer. A couple of them may have met, but their separate agendas made them part ways yet again, only this time by choice. Perhaps in their heart they remember the old ignorant days when there was no despair. Perhaps they refuse to acknowledge each other now because they wish to preserve the purity of their memories, untainted by the reality of today. How many people are in this circle? Who are they? That would be a secret. SM's RealizationThis man now known as "SM," no longer sheltered by the selectiveness of high society, now sees the ignorance like a plague upon mankind. He has joined the Philosophe Knights to aid their cause, even though in his heart he knows eradicating all ignorance is a quixotic dream. At first he still seeks to rejoin his friends, especially to the lord he once served as a bodyguard and manservant. However, one day, he did meet his lord. From the dark windows of a warehouse he watched his lord protecting a handful of doctors and scientists from a mob of zombies. In this handful of scientists, SM saw the target he was here to kill. Why did this lord not run away? He spent his last turns emptying his shells into the undead instead of fleeing to safety. Does he not know he risks himself for the ignorant? SM couldn't understand it. Maybe he once could, but his new cynic ideals prevented him from doing so now. Why would an aristocrat--smart, educated, privileged--stain his clothes over someone obviously not worth two hairs on his head? But he didn't go ask his lord. No, even if he asked, he wouldn't understand and wouldn't agree. SM put on his mask and walked into the building. He tossed his lord a FAK as indifferently as he could. Then he turned around and executed his mark while no one had the energy left to stop him, their efforts spent on the recent break-in. His lord watched the execution in silence. He didn't seem to condone SM's actions, but did not oppose the eradication of the ignorant he protected. 'So he understands then," SM thought. SM smiled under his mask and left the building... ...friends parting ways once more, because of their agendas differ so drastically. What does SM stand for?Good question. SM is an ambiguous combination of letters that could mean any number of things. We all have our first impressions. Perhaps some of you thought sado-masochism, or others thought StepMania or Super Mario. Most of you probably landed between those two extremes, or maybe you had no clue at all. The question is not what the letters S and M replace in letters but what "SM" together represent. It's an ideal. No, not even an ideal. It represents a bond or relationship between people, and what becomes of such a bond when tested against the might of "Time" and "Circumstance." Which brings us back to the original question. Why S? Why M?. Sinister and Malicious, Sorrowful and Mourning, Sadism and Masochism, Saint and Martyr. Perhaps it is an initial, or simply the first letters of two different peoples' names. The answer is: It doesn't matter. For all purposes here, it is arbitrary.
