You are inside a boathouse, the planked floor surrounding an empty square of water. Thin beams of light find ways through spaces in the roof, filtered by disturbed dust.
Somebody has etched the words seclusion is redundant when the dead world leaves you alone onto a wooden plank.
- You read the note. The pages are yellowed and the writing is by hand.
- to the reader of this note,
- after many days of sleeping here, hidden amidst the horrors I hear every day and every night, I have decided to leave and take the boat with me. I have also taken all the tools here, the hammer, the saw, the nails and of course, fuel as I need them dearly and I do not expect anyone to come by and need them, for I believe everyone dead, and my writing this note is perhaps more of a formality indicative of my previous occupation.
- but I must confess, I still hold hopes that one may come by and read this note, and know that there are other people still alive here, at least at one time. so I have left a flare gun for you, though I don't believe it wise to use it, for the dead, I believe, although unable to pinpoint the exact location should you fire it, will undoubtedly be attracted to the noise and light.
- I wish you my best, dear reader, if you exist, and you should know that I intend to take this boat as far down river as possible, and, hopefully outside of this hell-hole. kind regards,
- The note ends there, the long-winded drab that it was, without a proper inclusion of the writer's name. But now you know that the boat was taken and that it was maybe put to good use, although you probably didn't plan on using it anyway, if it had been present.
