Centuries-old lichen covers up until a naked break in the rock, where part of the cliff has fallen into the water. A radio tower looms overhead to the west. Abandoning the vehicle and heading south, you vaunt over a gate with a sign reading "Private property. No access." Down the dirt road you walk. It abruptly turns right against a broad, circular lake ahead. Here you pause, looking out. Inventory: You carry only a whistle, a bent knife and a smashed radio. It has been a long ride. Your blue jeans are shredded; the T-shirt, stretched 2 sizes larger, is more red than white, and your shoes are unaccounted for. Overtop it all you wear a yellow rain jacket.
