Shum Plaza

Description

The Burj al-Scarab boasted 7 stars.

A patch of scrubland teetering on the edge of Malton's Great Rift Valley, distinguished by the towering presence of the Burj Al-Scarab, a self-proclaimed 7-star motel.

History

One of east Pegton's worst slums, Shum Plaza was often mocked as 'Slum Plaza' until the construction of the extraordinary Burj silenced the critics (or forced them to at least stifle their giggles). Towering some 50 feet in the air (depending on how many storeys had fallen down in the night), and capable of accommodating several hundred guests in total discomfort, the Burj Al-Scarab's 7-star rating was based on a unique scale (taken from the Burj's own literature):

1. running water
2. elec- ecltri- eclecti - erm, lights.
3. telly (in the TV lounge)
4. bathtub (doubles as pond)
5. tea and coffee facilities (tin pot, two types of brown grit, water, fire)
6. er...
7. that's it.

The cuisine on offer ranged from haricots avec du pain grille to spaghetti a la Heinz.

The Burj had a reciprocal arrangement with The Hanne Arms, so that patrons of one could also consume, imbibe and pass out at the other on producing a special voucher.
