Description

Named after Laurentius of Rome, St. Laurence Church is a modestly sized structure of white stone bearing Romanesque architecture. Consisting of one main hallway and two diverging staircases, it is one of the smallest places of worship in Malton. Splitting arches line the main foyer above the fireplace, serving as the only source of heat for the building. Once beautiful stain glassed windows now pour unfiltered sunlight into the building, allowing fresh flora to penetrate the once steady bastion of faith. Dilapidated stairways lead to various small rooms of differing purpose, with the main chamber devoid of the numerous pews that lined its walls before being scraped as firewood.

Saint Lawrence of Rome or Laurence (Latin: Laurentius, lit. "laurelled"; 26 December AD 225 – 10 August 258) was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome, Italy under Pope St Sixtus II who were martyred in the persecution of the Christians that the Roman Emperor Valerian ordered in 258.
