Man, you're going to update this thing manually? IIRC User:Karek was writing some sort of switch for danger reports that can be used here to synchronise with the general map... I'll talk to him in IRC today about this --~~~~ [talk] 16:52, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

That would be great - I knew Karek had some code which might work for this, I was going to get it looking good before asking. I'm hoping that I won't be manually updating myself for long. cheers, Garum 18:29, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Constructive Criticism

Great idea! But... the implimentation leaves something to be desired. The map is much too big, it doesn't fit on a normal screen. And it's visually cluttered, it's really kinda painful to look at. Make it smaller, clean it up so it's smooth and easy to glance at -- because that's what this is for, a quick glance at the status of the malls... Why not use the Danger Map as the background, that'd be very useful? Or modify one of the existing maps to add this function? --WanYao 17:02, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Good points. I've made the map smaller and used a blank graph-paper style background. I can't make it much smaller or the icons will start to overlap. cheers, Garum 18:29, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Cool... You know you can size down the mall status icons, too? Inside the code... my wiki-fu sucks, so I have to use the cheat sheet to do it, but I might give it a whack later... But this is great, it's something that should have been done a long time ago. Kudos! Another idea would to make each icon link to the page for that mall when you click on it, rather than just to the status icon image itself... Not hard to do, methinks... --WanYao 20:47, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Ugh me again ... and suburb names, too... But, hey, it's a start... And like I said, this is something ought to have been done a long time ago. --WanYao 20:49, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
I didn't know that you could resize the images - I thought the size was set in stone. Changing them would now involve re-tweaking the coordinates, which is a bit of a pain, so I'll leave it unless ppl insist.
Using code lifted from another page, I've put names on which link to the mall articles. That's probably a bit more obvious for people than using the icons as links. cheers, Garum 21:15, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Image resizing is done like this: Mall-in zombie hands-small.jpg. also wan yao, unfortunately images always link to themselves. it's in a concept of wikipedia --~~~~ [talk] 22:06, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
There is actually a way to link images. {{Click}} although the way it's set up to work is a little strange so I don't know how it will work with a resized image.--Karekmaps?! 05:13, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Ah, it overlaps the image with the "link layer" (higher z-index). Will work here --~~~~ [talk] 07:36, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

About the images... i will upload the emoticons i used for each label, them you can call them. I am still thinking in a way to improve the way your map auto-updates with the data from the templates. This is an awesome work. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 21:33, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Updates

And done, I forced a resize on the Danger level images in the {{User:Karek/ProjDev/PD02MST02pt06}} template, so they should all be set to about 80px, cause you're doing x,y coord plotting it might throw it off a little bit and the images may need some adjusting, but other than that this map will now update with updates to each Mall's danger report.--Karekmaps?! 13:28, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

That's great, thanks. I think the icons look better smaller, and I'm glad it doesn't need to be manually updated. I'm visiting family and on ancient dial-up, but when I get back home in a few days I'll twiddle the coordinates, and then take out the grey lines behind the labels. That should leave it pretty finished, unless anyone else can think of stuff that needs doing? cheers, Garum 00:39, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Suburb danger levels

I was wondering, if in addition to the mall statues, we could have the suburb colors updated from the suburbs danger levels?--Memoman 03:41, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

That might be a bit hard unless Alpha Layer transparency is set on and the whitespace in the background image is set to transparent(doable but probably not advisable). The reason why is it's not possible to set color transparency, as far as I know, so the danger report color would have to be in the background(on the z axis it would have to be behind the bg-image).--Karekmaps?! 04:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
If those conditions can be met it should actually be rather simple.--Karekmaps?! 04:28, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Who is responsible for creating this page!

I want to know so that I can thank him! :D The man 20:33, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

I concur, this map is much more useful for determining the overall status of an area than even the suburb danger map! --Dazaras 01:26, 6 May 2008 (BST)

Template Change

I've circumvented the memory expensive MallSwitcher and MallSwitcherSwitcher templates that were creating that sucking sound on your bandwidth. Map is just as functional and more flexible coding is in place if future functions or changes are ever needed. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 22:08, 19 June 2008 (BST)

Map Overhaul

I have used the StatusMap System to create a Mall Status Map with an awesome factor 30% higher than the current iteration. It's currently sitting in my sandpit here. Can anybody see any problems with the mock up, or does anybody have any objections against implementing this version? -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 21:01, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

After that overwhelming response, I'll just implement and then you can comment/complain. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 14:02, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
Boo! Hiss!
Seriously though, looks nice. Good work :). Linkthewindow  Talk  14:06, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
After some discussion with Iscariot, I've edited the template to be less cluttered. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 22:55, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

*Sniff*

I miss the old smilies in this new map. :( --Thadeous Oakley 15:04, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Ugh... I find the new map almost unreadable. All kinds of colour codes which are too hard to distinguish, etc. etc. The old map, with its standardised smiley-face status symbols which everyone recognises from the mall reports, was much more user-friendly. A quick scan and I could see the status of all the malls in town. Now? ... it's a mess of visual gibberish. You should've just K.I.S.S.-ed it. --WanYao 17:36, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I stuck the original version at the top of my userpage - I prefer it too. Garum 00:23, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Mostly a carry over from the fact the other maps don't have room for those images, since they usually have several hundred buildings. You're of course welcome to stick the images back into the template. Though they'll likely need some realigning. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 15:33, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

A smaller map

I was bored and reading through some of the discussion here and I made a smaller version of the map. Anyone interested can see it in my sandbox. Would this be useful on the main page of the mall information center, as it doesn't take up much space? Also, a lot of people seem to like the old danger status icons. If there's still interest in seeing those on the new style map (with the suburb colors and suburb names available on hover-over) I could whip something up.--GANG Giles Sednik CAPD 02:30, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
