Campaign against the UCBS MERCS

PRE-AMBLE

"...And now we come to the third of our series of lectures on the phenomenon known as the 'Trenchcoater'. This week, we will focus on the most social form of trenchie, the Military Obsessive, or MO.

We have briefly discussed these before in our first lecture, "The Apparel and Trappings of the Malton Trenchcoater", and as observed then we see that the MO has certain hallmarks that seperate him from the normal Survivors of Malton. The standard MO will:

  • ...be of the military career. In fact, they may even refuse to gain skills from other career paths, regardless of how beneficial they may be. Hence, do not be surprised to find Level 11 MOs with over 2000XP. Obviously, any survivor hording this amount of XP is playing into the Zombies hands.
  • ...carry weapons that do not and will never appear in the game. Typical examples will be machine guns and grenade launchers, a true MO will provide the make and model of his weapon, he may even name it; "Mary-Jane" is quite popular. This kind of denial to face reality prevents him from studying the weapons that are available to him and therefore being at his most efficient with them.
  • ...speak quite a lot in game. Most of this will be in some kind of pseudo-military speech which is completely unnecessary in this game, the AP can always be put to better use. Examples usual come from war movies that the player has seen and wants to replicate. I'm sure there are better places for this than a game based on zombie milieu.
  • ...they will completely ignore the fact that real armed forces utilize personnel such as medics and scientists, and all MOs will carry no items that will be of use to anyone but themselves.

What separates the MO from other Trenchcoaters is that they prefer to operate in groups where they have some small chance of mutual understanding and can develop social skills by competing in completing basic tasks such as barricading biuldings all the way up to EHB. Upon completing this task, a big deal will usually be made of it.

Groups of MOs are usually found in revive queues, as, despite having well organized attack plans, involving the word 'Operation' in every phase, noone thought to bring along a tool kit or revive needles.

I would like you to have a look at Specimen A. You can see several of the properties that we have previously discussed, such as the macho psychobabble and military speech.

I point you now to UBCS Carlos Olivera, a member of this group. Note that he is of Military Career, wears an abundance of military garb, and carries weapons that are unsuited to the game. What's interesting about this case is that this character was developed for this group only. A complete waste of AP if the group is dissolved.

And now to Leon Cane. Note that he has a huge abundance of XP, but yet limits his own development by staying at Lv30.

Further qualities can be seen on the BBC's forum where it is seen the Mercs are wanting praise and attention for killing some zombies. I'm sure it was a task befitting of a group who are put together for combat alone.

And this brings us to our last point, most of the group can now be found scattered amongst the revive points in Pimmbank..."

THE U.B.C.S MERCS FOR HIRE The FOD awaits the emergence of the skill at arms, coordination, and tactical genius from this serious group of hard-core combat veterans. They cover us in their blanket of arrogance and disdain for Pker groups. As we go about doing the work to shake Malton from it's complacency, we have felt their barbs and their bravado ooze forth from their wiki like so much brackish filth. We can stand by no longer. The guilty must be punished.
