St. Wulfstan's Hospital

Description

St. Wulfstan's Hospital.jpg

Named after Saint Wulfstan, a pagan warlord known for his complete brutality who converted to Christianity in the 6th century. At the point of conversion, he pledged a vow to God to devote his life to healing people rather than disemboweling them with his broadsword. His vow was that he would save as many souls from pain as he had condemned to death before he himself left this mortal place. Legend has it that he came to use the oft-bloodied sword as an angel of medical mercy. Because he had killed so many in his time, he grew more apprehensive as he became older that he might never fulfill his vow before his impending death, and would never redeem his soul to enter Heaven.

According to the story, St. Wulfstan had reached the ripe age of 110 and was no longer physically able to care for the sick, and was being tended to himself by monks. A young scribe had calculated that Wulfstan only needed to heal three more people to complete the terms of his vow. He had come so far, and lived so long, but the chances of his redemption looked slim. One day, a pregnant woman was brought into the monastery. She was in labour, but the delivery was not going well. While the monks tried their best, it was clear that the woman and her unborn child would die soon. As sudden as a gust of wind, Wulfstan entered the room wielding his broadsword. The reluctant monks withdrew from the bed while Wulfstan made one sweeping final cut, flaying open the woman's belly. He then dropped his sword and brought a pair of healthy twins from the womb of the woman and laid them on the bed next to her.

St. Wulfstan then walked out the door and, the monks sutured the woman and bathed the twins. The young scribe looked out of the window and saw Wulfstan walking outside, away from the monastery. Wulfstan himself was never again seen, but on that night a bright star shone over the monastery and it was taken as a sign by all that Wulfstan had been taken by God, now that his vow had been fulfilled.
