This is an open discussion of a rough draft for a "community sysop recall/demotion" policy.
The following procedure would be required for the community to "recall" or demote a sysop:
- A minimum quorum of voters is required for the vote to be valid. I suggest 20.
- 75% of all non-Abstention votes must be in favour of demotion
- A one week "cooling off" period must take place between the date the demotion vote is called and the commencement of actual voting.
Rationale
The current "self-policing" method for Misconduct/Demotion has come under significant and, frankly, often justified criticism in the UDwiki community. This policy attempts to address this issue.
I have purposefully made it difficult -- but not impossible -- for a sysop to get demoted. To achieve 75% against of a significant portion of the community, and after a 1 week "cooling off" period, would illustrate that the sysop in question has truly lost his/her "trusted user" status.
Some people will argue that this turns sysop-ship into a mere popularity contest, and that it will bind sysops's hands and cause them to avoid making correct but sometimes unpopular decisions. I respond that, given the very stringent conditions required for a community demotion, this is patently false. You'd really have to have screwed up to lose the trust of 75% of the active wiki community.
Given the 75% majority, the quorum and the one week cooling off period... I ask anyone and everyone... "If you're doing your job well and properly, what have you to fear from this policy?"
