You are inside a classroom of Pridmore Way School, a middle school. Wooden panels have been fitted into window frames, made to block interior light and movement. Mattresses, cushions, blankets, and dirty fabrics function as sleeping arrangements. A large map of world geography has markings all over it.
Names have been written across the whiteboard, resembling a guestbook. Overtop some of the names somebody has spraypainted interestingly, we see no repetition of signatures here with thick lettering.
- You examine the ceiling panel, standing up on the edge of a shelf. Nudging the panel aside, you peak in. A dying flashlight brightens the recess between the level of the ceiling panels and the ceiling of the building. The space has been converted into a living compartment. An air ventilation pipe has been cut into; blankets are stuffed inside. Wooden boards are laid across struts, providing crawl space that can better handle weight than the panels.
You take a better look at the flashlight, which sits inside the cut pipe. You see what it illuminates. Only someone small could sleep here safely and comfortably. A few spent shotgun shells are caught up in the fabric. A teddy bear stares at you, its head detached except by string and frayed cloth, like sinew. You pick up the flashlight, but it dies. You shake it a little. You decide a dead battery or a broken flashlight is not worth it to take; and someone left it here not long ago. Maybe taking it would be like stealing. You are a looter, not a thief. This is what you think.
You climb back down, moving the panel back into place.
