My friends of the ELT. Several weeks ago I discovered almost at the same time two incredible resources to the cause of Awesome music. One was Songza, shown to me by Lychee, which allowed me to get almost any music I wanted on demand (even if most of the songs are shit versions recorded by drunken hooligans at screaming concerts on their cell phones). The other I found at my dad’s place- a book compilation list of all the Top 40 Billboard hits from 1955 to 1988. With these, I spent the next while compiling the list you see below, based on two criteria: :1. Is the song fun to listen to? :2. When you read the title, does a part of the song start playing in your head?

In addition to the Billboard hits, I threw in some of my own favorites that never made the top 40 (or did so after ’88), as well as a few others that seemed important enough to include. I bring you this massive piece of work for two reasons; One, to bring back the memory of an age when guitar was king, when bands actually needed to sing, and when slow and smooth was just as fine as fast and intense. Two, because I need your help- in many cases, songs here simply have similar titles to ones I remember, or were covers of versions I remember which didn’t make the 40, and thus I need some added assistance in sorting the wheat from the chaff. You may also want to post songs you think should be added which I may have missed. (Note- if a band name appears on the list with no songs to its name, it basically means “all their songs”, or if they have more than ten I recall.) But for good or evil, here it is. The Big List.
