Hi there. Welcome to my safehouse. I won't apologize for the darkness. Enlightenment comes from within. And those generators-- the smoke, the noise, and the jabbering trenchcoaters they attract. Can't stand for it, myself. The natural glow of twilight is so much nicer.
Have you been outdoors lately? Anymore, there are folks who spend months indoors, reinforcing their barricades, traveling from building to building through this bizarre system of underground tunnels. We're becoming like the Viet Cong, or the Taliban. Or like naked mole rats. Addicted to the electric buzz of our generators, afraid to show our faces to the world.
Have you been outdoors lately? It's beautiful out there. Remember Stanstock? The roses are blooming again in Whetcombe Park. And in Whitehead. When was the last time you took a nap under the bodhi tree in Inder Park? It's bigger than ever, you know.
That rainstorm we had yesterday-- it cleared up the air and made the sky sparkle like a wonder. The breeze, the sun, the rich odor of the rose blossoms. Malton has never been more beautiful, friend, yet you live like a spider in a hole. Why?
The zombies, right. The undead. Do you mean to tell me that, in these several years of quarantine, you have never been undead? Yeah, that's what I thought. Was it really so bad? You can wander the streets without fear, sleep where you like, and the worst thing to happen is you'll be shot in your sleep and have to struggle a bit to stand again. None of this scrabbling about for syringes or med kits or ammunition. Just the summer breeze and the bodhi tree and the BARHAH. Was being a zombie really such a bother?
Don't get me wrong-- I don't mind being human. But I can't say I dislike being a zombie, either. Sometimes you're one, sometimes you're the other. And that's no reason to barricade the buildings, or to run those awful smoky clanging generators.
Oh, don't think I don't see what you're up to with that fuel can. Don't the fumes ever get to you? Yes, you're looking a tad light-headed right now. But really, think about what you're doing. Haven't you been listening to a word I say? I realize this is a NecroTech building... why do you think I'm here? No, I don't want anyone manufacturing syringes. Frankly, I'd be happier if the zombies ransacked this building and then slept in it. Doors and windows open, fresh breeze blowing in. What more could anyone ask for?
Look, you really don't want to install that generator.
Haven't you been outdoors lately? Don't you remember what a summer breeze feels like? Don't you miss the smell of fresh, smokeless air? No shut-in must, no foul generator fumes?
Won't be deterred, now will you. Well. I'm peaceful as a rule, but do carry a fire axe for just such emergencies.
Humph. That's better. Help me dump this mangled machine out the-- oh, now you're pulling a pistol on me, are you? Turning violent all of a sudden? Didn't notice the eight shotguns slung around my neck... darkness has its advantages, you know.
That's more like it. But I'd rather your corpse not stink the place up while I sleep. Let me just pry the plywood off this window... there we go.
