Start Recording, Interview #7, with Dunstan Smit, 2008-07-14 20:28:00
- Before I ever knew anything about zombies, or the military, I was a med school student. I worked for 2 years in a hospital.
Sorry Dunstan, but I'm gonna need you to fast forward to your involvement with the outbreak.
- Oh, okay. After my 28th birthday, I joined the Irish Army. Went through training quickly. Joined up with the infantry. Then in 2005, there was the Malton incident. Her Fuckin' Majesty was begging for help getting her country in order. Ireland was the first country to respond. We coulda told her to stuff it, if we weren't so damn nice...
Did they tell you anything? About the zombies I mean.
- No, the brass wanted their hands kept clean, apparently.
- My team was taken to the Malton containment wall. Our mission was to destroy a train loaded with arms, just sitting in Shillito Drive Railway Station. We didn't want any civvies getting ahold of them, and going off to add to the chaos. It was supposed to go to Fort Perryn, but the rail lines had been clogged up with abandoned trains. They gave us some hazmat suits, fat lot of good they did. We mounted up on a couple of jeeps, they let us through the gates, and we went out. The streets were almost completely deserted, except for the snow, and there were some kids walking down the street. Schoolchildren, couldn't have been much older.
- Our orders were to leave everyone we encountered, but... the sarge couldn't leave them.
- We stopped to radio for an evac, and one of the girls collapsed from exhaustion. O'Malley propped her up against the jeep, and I kept working the radio, and then the fucking Zs showed up. We warned them away, they didn't listen. I didn't know they were what they were at the time, so when we opened fire, it was a big surprise to see that they didn't go down. All they did was moan like some fuckin' invalids, and chase after you. I put a whole mag into one of them and it didn't slow down... Fuck, one of them got behind us and took down the sarge. I can still remember his screams. Suddenly I was in charge, and my squad had their heads in their asses. They were coming in from all sides, we were in a melee so suddenly that it all went to shit. Zs shoving their bodies all over us, couldn't even get back to the jeeps. So I yelled at everyone who could hear me to follow. We blasted a path into a nearby factory, and barricaded ourselves into the second floor. We were short three men and two children.
Why weren't you rescued?
- We did call for evac and we got a response saying to hold out for ten minutes. Ten-fucking-minutes. We were there for five days. We were dehydrated, and all our medical supplies were used to treat Leeson's bite. He was dying.
How did you do it?
- [He holds up a can of beer] We had walked into a beer cannery. The factory's top floor warehouse was full of this stuff. It kept us alive.
- Bastards eventually some-how got through. We barricaded everything, we thought we were safe, but it just wasn't enough. They were like some damn termites. I got a lucky headshot on one of them, and that was just a damned revelation. I could've slapped myself. We never tried the brain. I yelled for my squad to aim for the head. Bastards were already climbing up the stairs. Too late. Too fucking late. They were close enough to grab now, the children and two of my squaddies ran away and I found myself under a pile of flesh eating corpses. I was too drunk to feel pain. After a while, they just left me alone. Then I took my last breath.
But that wasn't your last breath...
- No. You should know that, I'm the one that rez'd your ass after all.
Yeah...anyways
- The next thing I remember was... like I had entered into a dissociative state. Third-person view and all that jazz. I still have nightmares about those people I killed. I wandered all over the place, got shot a few times by some desperate survivors who were hunting during the winter freeze. First winter of the quarantine, everyone thought that they would freeze.
- I got downed quite a few times. I got up every time. Then one day I had a stroke of luck. Someone snuck up behind me and jabbed me with something sharp while I was hunting in a fancy office building. Before I could react, my knees buckled and my entire body felt like it was being ripped apart and stitched back together. I woke up in a sick bay of sorts, with a huge headache. The sun blew its load in my face.
- I heard footsteps. She came into the room. It was a lady, a young one, with a bloody white coat and glasses. Maria, said her name was. She told me, "Don't worry, nothing's getting in here. We dressed you while you were knocked out. Trader's got some food and water for sale downstairs." Pretty young thing got a peek at me naked, never got to return the favor. Still wonder about her sometimes, but that hospital's long overrun, never saw her again.
- I got some food, went back to the doctor lady for some conversation. She told me to go to Fort Perryn to regroup with the American military. She thought I was Yank, which was kinda funny. I did live in the US for the first ten years of my life, so I guess that explains my accent. I figured I could do some good at Perryn, maybe try and find my squaddies and dress 'em down for leaving me behind. So I said my thanks and goodbyes and I left.
- It took about two days to get to Fort Perryn. At Perryn, I joined up with an American combat unit who had been fighting to reclaim the Fort. This unit consisted mainly of volunteers from the 82nd Airborne Division, and a few civilians who decided it was best to stick around the 82nd. I've spent nearly a year in that unit since then, and, well, here we are. It took us long enough, but you're interviewing me in Fort Perryn, a few weeks after we've finally reclaimed it.

You are at Somerville Boulevard. Somebody has spraypainted -=[ REVIVE POINT ]=- onto a wall. There are three dead bodies here. They all smell strange. You took a Headshot from SamuelGreenburg the Zombie Hunter! You will need to spend an extra 5AP to stand up. (7 hours and 18 minutes ago)
