Featured Images on UDWiki

This page highlights images that the UDWiki community finds beautiful, stunning, impressive, or informative. Featured pictures are the visual equivalent to featured articles and, as such, are even more subjective. There are currently 0 featured pictures, and they are categorized by the topic they represent. All featured pictures are also available in a category.

If you wish to add a specific image to this page, please nominate it on Category talk:Featured Images. Images listed here should be either in the public domain or covered by a free license.

Featured Content

Nominations

This star symbolizes the featured content on UDWiki.

Featured pictures are images that add significantly to articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or being eye-catching to the point where users will want to read its accompanying article. Taking the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words," the images featured on Category:Featured Images should illustrate a Wikipedia article in such a way as to add significantly to that article, according to the featured image criteria.

If you believe an image should be featured, please add it below to the current nominations section. Conversely, if you believe that an image should be unfeatured, add it to the nomination for delisting section.

For promotion, if an image is listed here for nine days with five or more reviewers in support and the consensus is in its favor, it can be added to the Wikipedia:Featured pictures list. Consensus is generally regarded to be a two-third majority in support, including the nominator and/or creator of the image; however, anonymous votes are generally disregarded, as are opinions of sockpuppets. If necessary, decisions about close candidacies will be made on a case-by-case basis.

The archive contains all opinions and comments collected on this page, and also nomination results.

Step 1: Evaluate

Evaluate the merit of a nomination against the featured picture criteria. Most users reference terms from this page when evaluating nominations.

For specific advice on criteria and feedback on images, please post at picture peer review first.

Step 2: Create a subpage

Create a page to place the image on; this page needs to be a subpage of Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. To create a subpage, add a title for the image you want to nominate in the form below (e.g., Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Labrador retriever) and click the "Create new nomination" button. <inputbox> type=create width=50 break=no buttonlabel=Create new nomination default=Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/ preload=Template:FPCnom/init editintro=Template:FPCnom/intro </inputbox>

Step 3: Transclude and link

Transclude the newly created subpage to the Featured picture candidate list (direct link).

How to comment

  • If you approve of a picture, write Support followed by your reasons.
  • If you oppose a nomination, write Oppose followed by your reasons. All objections should be accompanied by a specific rationale that, if addressed, would make you support the image. If your concern is one that can only be addressed by the creator, and they haven't nominated or commented on the image, and are a Wikipedian, you should also notify them directly.
  • If you think a nominated image obviously fails the featured picture criteria, write Speedy close followed by your reasons. Nominations may be closed early if this is the case.
  • You can weak support or weak oppose instead, so that your opinion will be weighed as half of a "full" opinion.
    • To change your opinion, strike it out (with <s>...</s>) rather than removing it.
Recommendations added early in the process may be disregarded if they do not address concerns and/or improvements that arise later in the debate. Reviewers are advised to monitor the progress of a nomination and update their votes accordingly.
Prior to giving an opinion, the image should be assessed on its quality as displayed at full size (high-resolution) in an image editing program. Please note that the images are only displayed at thumbnail size on this page. The thumbnail links to the image description page which, in turn, links to the high-resolution version.
Please remember to be civil, not to bite the newbies and to comment on the image, not the person.
You may find the glossary useful when you encounter acronyms or jargon in other voters' comments.

Editing candidates

If you feel you could improve a candidate by image editing, please feel free to do so, but do not overwrite or remove the original. Instead, upload your edit with a different file name (e.g. add "edit" to the file name), and display it below the original nomination. Edits should be appropriately captioned in sequential order (eg, Edit 1, Edit 2, etc), and describe the modifications that have been applied.

Is my monitor adjusted correctly?

In a discussion about the brightness of an image, it is necessary to know if the computer display is properly adjusted. Displays differ greatly in their ability to show shadow detail. There are four dark grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display shadow detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings. Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal shadow detail. Please take this into account when voting.
Displays also differ greatly in their ability to show highlight detail. There are light grey circles in the adjacent image. If you can discern three (or even four) of the circles, your monitor can display highlight detail correctly. If you see fewer than three circles, you may need to adjust the monitor and/or computer display settings (probably reduce the contrast setting). Some displays cannot be adjusted for ideal highlight detail. Please take this into account when voting.
On a gamma-adjusted display, the four circles in the color image blend into the background when seen from a few feet away. If they do not, you could adjust the gamma setting (found in the computer's settings, not on the display), until they do. This may be very difficult to attain, and a slight error is not detrimental. Uncorrected PC displays usually show the circles darker than the background.
Note that on most consumer LCD displays (laptop or flat screen) viewing angle strongly affects these images - correct adjustment on one part of the screen might be incorrect on another part for a stationary head position. Click on the images for more technical information.
If possible, calibration with a hardware monitor calibrator is recommended.

Criteria

A featured image:

  1. Is of a high technical standard.
    • It has good contrast, accurate exposure and neutral colour balance.
    • It shows no significant compression artifacts, burned-out highlights, image noise ("graininess") or other processing anomalies. Examples of common technical problems can be found here.
    • Its main subject is in focus, it has good composition and has no highly distracting or obstructing elements.
    • Exceptions to this rule may be made for historical or otherwise unique images. If it is considered impossible to find a technically superior image of a given subject, lower quality may sometimes be allowed.
  2. Is of high resolution.
    • It is of sufficiently high resolution to allow quality print reproduction. Still images should be a minimum of 1500 pixels in width and height; larger sizes are generally preferred. The size of animated images is judged less strictly, though larger is still preferred. Further information on image size can be found here.
      • Exceptions to this rule may be made for historical, technically difficult or otherwise unique images, if no higher resolution could realistically be acquired. This should be explained in the nomination so that it can be taken into consideration.
      • Note that vector graphics in SVG format can have a nominal size much smaller than this, as by their nature they can be infinitely scaled without loss of quality.
      • Animations and video may be somewhat smaller.
  3. Is among UDWiki's best work.
    • It is a photograph, diagram, image or animation which is among the best examples of a given subject that the wiki has to offer.
    • It illustrates the subject in a compelling way, making the viewer want to know more.
    • A featured image is not always required to be aesthetically pleasing; it might be shocking, impressive, or just highly informative. Highly graphic, historical and otherwise unique images may not have to be classically beautiful at all.
  4. Has a free license. It is available in the public domain or under a free license. Fair use images are not allowed. To check which category a particular image tag falls under, see the list at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.
  5. Adds significant encyclopedic value to an article and helps readers to understand an article.
    • The image is used in one or more articles.<ref>An image has more encyclopedic value (often abbreviated to "EV" or "enc" in discussions) if it contributes strongly to a single article, rather than contributing weakly to many. Adding an image to numerous articles to gain EV is counterproductive and may antagonize both FPC reviewers and article editors.</ref> It is preferable to wait a reasonable period of time (at least 7 days) after the image is added to the article before nominating it, though this may be ignored in obvious cases, such as replacing a low-resolution version of an image with a higher resolution of the same image.
    • A picture's encyclopedic value (referred to as "EV") is given priority over its artistic value.<ref>While effects such as black and white, sepia, oversaturation, and abnormal angles may be visually pleasing, they often detract from the accurate depiction of the subject.</ref>
  6. Has a descriptive, informative and complete file description. A complete file description:
    • Properly identifies the main subject.
    • Describes the context of the photograph, painting, or other medium.
    • States the most relevant meta-detail (such as date, location, event, version, etc). It is suggested that additional relevant information that becomes known during the course of the nomination be subsequently included in the file description.

Mall-caigar mall.jpg

This one has some history to it, which I'll have to dig up when I have moar time. Something about Hagz wanting caiger to have a "special" status for Caiger on the Mall Status Center and it turned into both an Arbitration case and a Miscontribulation case. Should we feature such infamous images? I sure think we should nominate them and see.

File:Duckling01.jpg

Speaking of Arbies and Misconduct, who can forget the time Yon ruled during a joke Arbies case that a picture of a fluffy duck be placed on the main page. Misanthropy complied, using sysop buttons to do so, and it landed him in sysop jail. Due to the bizarre ruling, Mis was given two warnings for committing one edit. This is that fluffy duck.

The mere mention of Arbitration and/or Misconbitration often incites a certain amout of ire from the wiki community. Often, the manifestation of that ire come in the form of profane walls of text. Others prefer a more subtle approach, however. This little guy below has become a symbolic gesture of frustration and defiance on our beloved wiki. The size of the emoticon when placed on a page is often indicadive of the level of frustration incited in the user. At the time of this writing, it is one of the most linked images on the wiki. Doe that say a lot about the level of angst around here?

Ok so on to srs bidnezz...sort of. The image below has been nestled away on Suburb/History for the past 4.5 years as an example of the new danger map system. Its a bit of an easter egg of sorts. You'd have to be the type that finds himself reading obscure wiki articles and clicking their images since the thumbnail is too small to tell what it is and there really is no reference to it anywhere on the wiki. I am that kind of guy apparently because I stumbled across this wiki gem a couple of years back. On April 1st in 2009 and 2010, someone played a similar prank and left the maps in joke state for all of the wiki to see.

File:Ubapril2008.jpg

Speaking of April Fool's, players logging into Urban Dead on April 1st, 2008 were treated with recent actions screens in the style of mock Facebook news feed. The moment was captured in this image and uploaded in order to document the occasion. This was the last official April Fool's Day joke added to the game by Kevan. Something deadly serious must have happen in Kevan's life as he seemingly lost his entire sense of humo(u)r in 2009.

Ok so I'm a little biased on this one but just look at this badass bitch. You can't help but worship this. Try to resist. You can't, can you?

This is, like one of the most beloved images on the wiki.

Cornholio is not known for his subtlty. He's contributed many...memorable images to the wiki. None of them will be featured here. One such image was so rediculous, so outlandish, and so easily manipulated that it couldn't go unmocked. Sadly, the original was deleted so we no longer have a comparison. You'll have to settle for after only version. Hint, Wir Suchen Dich means "We're recruiting" in German. This is probably less funny if your native language is German, I suppose. For the rest of us...well just look.

Self explanatory.

File:Killer.jpg

If you've been around the wiki any length of time you've seen this one. Maybe you were a little unsure about the person you were sharing a building with so you search their character name on the wiki. Maybe you found a template containing this image on that search result. And maybe you then decided to just go ahead and find a different buildimg to stay inside. Or maybe you gave them a virtual high five. Whatever the case, you'll probably never look at tall and imposing firemen or lumberjacks weilding axes at sunset the same ever again. To you, this is probably now the universal sign for homicidal behavior.

File:Matraves Crescent Police Dept.jpg

Uploaded on December 9th, 2005, this location block image was a shining example of the effort and level of sophistication being put into content in the early days of UDWiki. This particular image, in all of its MS Paint glory, was the singular inspiration for boxy's Location Page Building Toolkit, a project which may have saved us from a wiki that looks as if it was designed by fifth graders. This image is still displayed on the wiki article for Matraves Crescent Police Department, perhaps to highlight how far we have come, or perhaps as an homage to those early crayon and Elmer's glue days that UDWiki endured.

Suggestions

Go ahead and add them to the discussion page. The ones above should not be used as any sort of gauge for quality considerations. I personally think they should all be featured but that's just me. Serious and silly suggestions welcomed. This should be a fun project. If we need to be all bidnezz we can do it on the official project page when I get around to making it.
