Well. Borehamwoods tough because you only have one life.
Lets see.
Weve got a couple of stages to go through.
The next day is going to be mad, with everyone working out whats going on.
The zombies need to get memories of life (A skill) before they can open doors. thats going to take 2 days at least so we should be safe if we shut doors. Besides they will probably eat those people on the street first.
As a firefighter the best way to level up is.
Get to a hospital and search for first aid kits.
Hit someone with a fire axe.
Heal them with a first aid kit.
In a day and a half you'll have enough XP for your first level.

It's only better barricaded because someone has gone to a factory, searched and found a pipe, and used that to bar the door. I could do it now if i wanted, but i havent yet.
