He that lives upon hope will die fasting.- Benjamin Franklin
Wallace "Doc" Jenkins
Wallace was born on October 27, 1985 in Malton suburb of Kempsterbank. After an uneventful childhood, Wallace enlisted in the military as a medic in the summer of 2003. He was sent out of the city to receive basic training. After a few years of inactive duty, he was sent back to Malton in a small squad of five infantrymen, including himself, and their helicopter pilot. He had heard about the outbreak in Malton but due to the quarantine, was not able to return to his home and had no idea what was being contained. His chance to return finally came when he was told he would be sent into Malton through Hollomstown as part of a recon unit. The men in his squad consisted of good friends of his that he had stuck through basic training with. Their names are as follows:
- Sgt. Joseph Pearson - Rifleman
- Cpl. Louis Vickers - Light Machine Gunner
- PFC. Allan Jones - Assistant Gunner
- PFC. Dean Edgecomb - Radio Operator
- Pvt. Wallace Jenkins - Medic
- Cpl. Samuel Nickles - Pilot
Though Wallace was greatly respected as the team's medic, he was known among the group to be a little jumpy and was easily frightened, causing them to doubt his abilities on the field. Their helicopter flew in over the quarantine walls of Hollomstown and after a few minutes of flight toward their LZ in Tollyton they began taking small arms fire. Samuel yelled to the men in the back over the whir of the copter and pinging of bullets.
Samuel: "Jesus, we're taking fire!"
Joseph stood up and yelled back.
Joseph: "From what? Are they humans?"
Wallace, who had been nervous throughout the flight, was now really beginning to question their mission. Why wouldn't they be human? He leaned forward in his seat and looked out the front window in the pilot's compartment and got his first view of the city since he had left it. He was stunned at what he was seeing. Smoke billowed from burning buildings in every direction. Windows were shattered and very few lights were on. His ears were nagged with a constant beeping coming from the helicopter's lit up dashboard and felt the vehicle shudder slightly. The shots they were taking began to die down when Joseph barked at the pilot.
Joseph: "What's our status?"
Samuel: "Shit, the choppers taken some serious hits. We're gonna have to make an emergency landing but I can't get it to pull up above these damn buildings and the LZ is still a good ways off!"
Dean suddenly sat up and looked out the window while tightly gripping the back of the pilot's seat. He stretched out a shaking finger and pointed at a clearing in what looked like a park.
Dean: "There, you think you can land us in that park?"
Samuel: "It's risky, but I'll certainly try."
Their speed and altitude began decreasing significantly as they neared the park. As it got closer, Wallace was able to make out a sign that read: "Phillipson Park." Samuel hovered over the park and slowly landed the chopper, skillfully avoiding the nearby foliage. As the whirring blades ceased to operate, Joseph instructed them on what to do.
Joseph: "Alright men, Nickles will stay here with the chopper while we search the area for anything worth reporting. Sam, we'll return at 1600 hours to see how you're doing with the chopper. If it's damaged beyond your control, we'll all head to the original LZ on foot and call in to HQ on the radio."
Samuel gave him a quick salute and the squad proceeded out of the chopper and headed to the east. They walked with Joseph up front closely followed by Dean then Louis, Allan, and lastly him who walked alongside Allan. He and Allan had become pretty good friends in basic training. They discussed quietly what was going on in this city. Wallace felt relieved that he was not the only one who had no idea. They walked around overturned vehicles and debris that filled the streets. Joseph suddenly held up a hand instructing them to halt. Ahead of them Wallace could see what looked to be a man swaying slightly next to a lamp post. Wallace sighed, finally a civilian they could possibly get some answers from. Joseph took a step forward and called out to the man in a loud voice.
Joseph: "Sir, are you alright? Do you have any information on this citie's situation?"
The man slowly shuffled his feet to face them. That was when Wallace along with the rest of the squad realized that there was something very wrong. Wallace felt his stomach churn. Aside from the tattered business suit and blood stains covering said suit, there was a gaping hole in the middle of his abdomen and flowing from which were his entrails, or at least what was left of them. The man released an eerie howl that echoed around them along the street, causing Wallace to begin shaking all over. With arms stretched forward, the mauled man came at them.
Joseph: "Shit."
The sergeant raised his weapon and fired a small burst into the man's brain. Before any of the stunned soldiers could question their leader's actions, more moans similar to the one they had just heard began to fill the air all round them. What looked to be hundreds of whatever they were started closing in on them from the east.
Allan: "What in the hell..."
Joseph quickly handed out orders to the nerve-racked men.
Joseph: "Vickers, set up the LMG on that red sedan and Jones will assist you. Edgecomb, you and me will watch their rear. Jenkins, you're keeping lookout while helping where you can. As soon as you're ready Vickers, open up on 'em."
When they were all in position, Vickers tore into the horde. A few went down but many more seemed completely untouched as they continued to shuffle their feet to their position. Most of the ones that had gone down were dragging their crippled bodies, glazed eyes focused on their target. Wallace had only been issued a pistol due to his position as a medic. He fired at the crawling carcasses.
Vickers: "What the hell are these things?! They wont die!"
Just then the sound of shattering glass pierced their ears from the building to their right. At least fifty more of the things began trickling out of the display window of what looked like a worn down museum. Joseph and Dean directed their fire on the new arrivals.
Wallace: "Oh my God, there's no end to them!"
As he turned to check on Louis' condition, he was just in time to witness the horrific sight of the back of the young machine gunner's head explode, ceasing the constant LMG fire and allowing the front horde to advance unhindered. Allan ducked down behind the car and yelled as his friend's gray matter peppered him.
Allan: "Shit, Vickers is down! We're getting sniper fire from that tower across the street!"
More bullets began to rain down upon them. The situation was beginning to look very grim.
Joseph: "We're on their side dammit! Fuck it, we're falling back to the chopper men, let's go!"
They retreated in the direction they had come from while simultaneously firing on the horde of rotting creatures advancing on them. The things were coming from every direction now. When they were within about a hundred yards of the chopper Joseph took a shot in the leg and went down on the pavement, hard.
Dean: "Sarge!"
Dean ran back to help their fallen commander to his feet while blasting into the oncoming crowd but it was to late. Wallace and Allan watched in horror as the two were soon surrounded and set upon by the hundreds of living corpses. Wallace caught a glimpse of Dean having his jugular bitten into and torn out while he let out a gurgling scream. He could feel his stomach readying itself to leap out his throat while his heart seemed to beat it back down. The two companions could do nothing as they watched while their fallen comrade's yells died out. They were soon on the run once more as yet more of the things came at them along with a fresh rain of gunfire. Allan cried out in relief.
Allan: "There's the chopper! We're almost..."
He stopped as he stared at scene unraveling before their eyes. The sight of the overturned helicopter drained all hope of making it out of here from Wallace. They recognized the terrified looking pilot running to them, clutching a bloody arm while behind him was yet another group of the attackers. When he met up with them they merely looked at each other with their wide eyes and scanned the enclosing horde around them. Wallace saw that there seemed to be relatively few of the corpses to the northeast.
Wallace: "That way, we can get by and lose 'em. We should be able to just run by the few in the way."
The other two nodded their agreement. They did not stop until they were sure there were mostly out of danger. All that they could see behind them were a few of the shamblers that had been wandering the streets. When they reached a building that was less barricaded then most, they broke in to take refuge. As they sat against the inside wall of what looked like an abandoned warehouse, Wallace immediately inspected Samuel's wound. It was just a small gash. Samuel told him that one of the bastards had managed to take a chunk out of him when he was working on the helicopter. Wallace dressed it up and told him it was nothing serious. Afterward they all agreed that they would rest there for the night while Samuel told them he would take first watch.
Wallace woke to a bloodcurdling scream. In the early morning light he could just make out the two figures a few feet away, one bent over the other. Wallace called over shakily.
Wallace: "S-Sam? Allan? You guys alright?"
The figure that had been bent over slowly rose and turned to him. He could see the glimmer of the helmet visor in the darkness and heard the soft dripping of liquid from its face.
Wallace: "No..."
The reanimated pilot raised his arms and let forth a howling moan. That was when he lost it. His mind went completely blank as he dashed and smashed open the entrance of the building. He ran. He had no idea where he was going or what he was going to do, he just had to get away. He paid no attention to the zombies accumulating behind him in his blind run.
