The church was built in 1891 by a Irish expatriate, who was also a priest of the Church of Ireland. It was named after St. Columbanus, a very famous Irish missionary and the patron saint of, among other things, motorcyclists.


Before the outbreak the church was used for ceronmonies and weddings from people across Malton who stayed in the nearby motel overnight.
Originally, several large cemeteries were also planned to be built alongside the church - [[Wasteland 6,41|two]] [[Wasteland 5,42|buildings]] were torn down, leaving large open spaces. However, it was discovered that the ground was unsuitable for such purposes. The buildings were never rebuilt.
