What's {{SUBST:Nosubst|User:YourUserName/Sig}} do? (Especially the Nosubst part)--Toejam 18:45, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

That's the portion that goes into your preferences. The "SUBST:Nosubst" forces the wiki to leave the signature page as a pseudo-template (contained within your userspace) instead of adding all the text in the page as your signature, defeating the whole purpose. Pointless in the extreme, the wiki already forces the Subst: if a template is in your sig space on preferences, and the whole purpose of the {{Nosubst}}, as it is not explained above, is basically including whatever is after it between {{ and }} tags. Basically it makes it so that the Substitution call(Subst:) goes through another page, and since Susbt: only calls one page's code, specifically whatever is being Subst:'ed({{Subst:RandomTemplate}}) {{Nosubst}} makes it's page code {{RandomTemplate}}, Which is exactly what gets Subst:'ed onto the page. Little unclear but basically what Subst: does is instead of linking like a template it actually adds the template's content code to the page with the Subst: call. Anyway, I've now modified the page to remove the unneeded Subst:, and really we probably shouldn't be telling people to do this, or even how to do this, templated sigs have problems and it's set up to auto-Subst: for a reason.--Karek^maps?! 10:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure you don't need anything else in the nickname field beyond the sig template - I've not got any date-related code at all in there and my timestamps come through grand. Try it without the time magic words in it. 19:00, 29 May 2011 (BST)

I put the whole thing in a span class tag rather than a wiki table and it seems to have done the trick. ~ _{14:24, 30 May 2011 (UTC)}

I'm going to add this to a new section for common signature editing problems. It's due to an unclosed HTML tag, usually a <Span> tag. Forces the new code to render as if it were starting on a new line so if the time and date wasn't part of the sig template it will cause issues.--Karek^maps?! 10:32, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Two Things of Note

Do Not Include things in <noinclude></noinclude> tags in templated sigs It makes pages with multiple inclusions of your sig break faster because stuff in <noinclude></noinclude> tags is included in the template/page inclusions file size and templates on pages break when they reach a preset total size. --Karek^maps?! 02:00, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Also, a thing to look out for, spaces. Whenever possible remove spaces from your sig and replace them with the ASCII code &nbsp; It makes it so that the text won't auto-wrap. Saving it from placing half your sig on a different line as is currently the case with some popular use sigs.--Karek^maps?! 02:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Making it work...

I have designed a reasonable signature here: User:Zig13/signature which is fine (exept for the date and time not changing) but I am having trouble making it my default signature. If you want the time to display, don't use a templated sig. Instead place the coding into the nickname text box in your preferences. The code I use to get my time to display is {{subst:LOCALTIME}} {{subst:LOCALDAY}} {{subst:LOCALMONTHNAME}} {{subst:LOCALYEAR}} (BST). Local time is needed, because the servers are on a different time (at least some of the time... it may depend on daylight saving and the like). Instead of using ~~~~ I also use only 3 ~... ie ~~~ to sign (otherwise I get the time doubled up) -- boxy ^{talk • i} 08:56 27 April 2008 (BST)

The only way I've found of getting the 5 ~ to work in a sig is to includeonly the middle ~ and then subst the sig in the nickname box. Is that what you're suggesting? -- boxy ^{talk • i} 10:30 27 April 2008 (BST)

I don't know the limitations of what can be done while making a sig beyond what I checked up when revamping this article. If you put 5 ~ on your sig page it will subst for the current date as soon as you save the sig (always giving that date whenever included). If zig wants his date coloured the same as his sig link, then he should use the code I gave above... only put it in his preference instead of on his sig page -- boxy ^{talk • i} 10:43 27 April 2008 (BST)

Statistic

This google search finds about 180 users with a signature page. That's a very small chunk out of the 30,000 registered users. --Toejam 19:41, 25 October 2008 (BST)

That's irrelevant though as those 180 users tend to contribute more than the other 29,000. When they're users like DDR, Boxy, Nubis, AHLG, and Myself who all get something like 500 edits a week that can actually be a very very significant amount.
