Brain Rot is a zombie skill. Zombies with Brain Rot can only be revivified in a powered NT building -- and only if the technician possesses the NecroNet Access skill. Brain Rot also makes the zombie harder to DNA-scan.

Brain Rot is irreversible; therefore, when a player selects Brain Rot in the "Buy Skills" menu, they are first given a confirmation message. Like all zombie skills, Brain Rot costs 100 XP to learn.

In general, Brain Rot is only used by zombies who have no intention, or desire, to become human again. However, some players who may be "pro-survivor" opt to purchase Brain Rot. Doing so is often referred to as "Playing the game on Hard Mode" -- due to the difficulty of getting a revive should the character be killed. However, for these types -- and other Brain Rotted zombies seeking a revive for whatever reason -- a number of groups and players have decicated themselves to providing "Rot Revives". A list of current and former Rot Revive Clinics can be found at the end of this article.

Zombies with Brain Rot are often referred to as "Rotters".

Brain Rot In Depth

There is much debate in the scientific community as to the exact nature and cause of Brain Rot. Unfortunately, attempts to study the phenomenon in detail have been, for the most part, tragically unsuccessful.

Nonetheless, some of the major theories which have been proposed to explain Brain Rot are summarised below.

Physical changes to the brain (See left) cause a partial rewiring of both cortex's cannibalizing those neurons used in higher brain function. As such the area of the brain targeted for revivification shrinks to almost nothing.

Brain Rot has also been known to make it much harder for a NecroTech Employee to gather useful DNA Samples with their standard issue DNA Extractors. If a successful scan is taken of a rotter the following message is posted;

Warning: Cortex damaged. Do not attempt to revive.

The common term for zombies afflicted with Brain Rot is Rotters.

The Dirty Details

The neutrality of this section is disputed.
Please see discussion on the talk page.

The infection level deemed "Brain Rot", for lack of a better or more descriptive term, makes the zombie immune to a typical revivification, by corrupting the cortical tissue. Zombies afflicted with this stage of the disease can only be revivified using special technology found only inside a powered NecroTech building by a NecroTech Employee with NecroNet Access level approval and a working knowledge of how to properly use NecroTech Revivification Syringes.

Brain Rot has also been known to make it much harder for a NecroTech Employee to gather useful DNA Samples with their standard issue DNA Extractors. As such a standard warning has been issued as zombies with this stage of infection have grown in numbers, when scanned the DNA Extractors have been upgraded to warn NecroTech Employees to save their NecroTech Revivification Syringes for zombies with a better chance of reacting well to the serum. This standard issue message is Warning: Cortex damaged. Do not attempt to revive. all NecroTech Employees are strongly advised to heed that warning.

The more militaristic term for the zombies afflicted with Brain Rot is Rotters, throughout Malton Survivors use this term to describe the more aggressive zombies that seem to either not remember that they too were once a survivor or no longer care. It is commonly believed that the latter is correct since Rotters tend to display high levels of ability and motor functions in spite of their damaged brains. For example, the average Rotter in Malton has shown the ability to open doors and seem to have a grasp of phonetic languages as opposed to the more standard grunts and groans of less capable zombies

Some such zombies, however, seems to yearn to be free of their severe infection and to return to a living state. If a Rotter manages to push through the building's defenses in desperation they may not be hostile. Among these it seems that the more intelligent will gesture at themselves while grunting, and the less physically able seems to simply make a Mrh? sound. If a NecroTech Employees should run across a zombie performing either of these actions they are advised to attempt to provide assistance.

Advice to the Uninfected

Survivors with this state of infection and found standard NecroTech procedure unsatisfactory when seeking revivification. Some daring NecroTech Employees have shown initiative and established special groups dedicated to this purpose in addition to standard infection prevention procedure. Some of the more noteworthy of these groups include;

Active Brain Rot Revive Clinics
