20090108 Use of Flares Inside Buildings
SecretGoldfish 17:57, January 8, 2009
Suggestion type
New use of existing item
Suggestion scope
Flares can be used inside of unlit buildings to briefly improve search results and attacks.
Suggestion description
I know a variation of this idea has been discussed in the form of 'flashlights', 'chemsticks', etc., and been rejected as giving all of the benefit of genny searches without the accompanying downside. This idea is meant to be some middle ground.
I propose that use of flares inside of buildings be allowed for search and attack purposes. But, any illumination would only last for either (a) a specific number of searches or attacks, or; (b) a specific period of real time.
For example, in a darkened theater, a flare going off would provide lit or near-lit hit values for one full pistol clip or two loaded shotguns. A flare in a hospital would provide lit search results for 10 searches. This middle ground suggestion makes it possible to search or hit inside of darkened buildings but within limits of the number of flare guns you have and the total period of time or AP's the lighting is provided for.
This arguably tilts the field towards survivors, but you could also see this as leveling the field as it now stands -- there is a large penalty in searching for a generator and fuel cans and the genny can be quickly taken out, negating a day's worth of searching and a quarter of your carrying capacity.
Between the previous 'portable lighting devices' suggestions which were rejected and the existing genny/fuel combo being the SOLE means of lighting a building, this would seem to be a reasonable balance point.
Suggested Mechanics of Modification
I think due to variations in players' server speeds, the fairest way to implement temporary flare lighting is a specific number of actions per flare as opposed to a specific period of real time. So here is the formal suggestion:
Should UD be modified allow for the use of flares inside of buildings? An indoor flare will improve search results to those of a fully lit building for a specific period of 10 searches. An indoor flare will improve attack results to those of a fully lit building for a period of one full pistol clip OR two full shotguns.

- "Keep" - re: the "fire risk" issue which seems to loom large in many minds . . . here's where I don't understand this as an argument against: we already CAN fire flares inside a building. If I stumble across Papa holed up inside a darkened cinema, I'm flat out going to try to ventilate him. And if I'm low on AP or on ammo or just a bit bored in general, I'm going to launch a flare or two at him and hope for those 15 damage points. Heck, I fire flares inside of buildings REGULARLY and never once have they started a fire. It would seem this "fire risk" issue is long resolved. So, in UD we can fire flares off inside of buildings but must pretend that the extra illumination wouldn't affect visibility and improve the chance to hit or find? Bottom line, it's already accepted that flares used indoors will not spark a fire, all we're being asked to do is close our eyes to the obvious illumination affect. User:SecretGoldfish

- Spam I have some questions. Firstly. Barring an armoury why would you search in a dark building. Secondly, you don't explain if its 10 searches or 6 bullets or 6 bullets AND 10 searches. thirdly, is it only your searches, shooting that counts or anyones in the building? fourthly the benefits of generators and fuel is increased search rates for needles, bullets, first aid supplies. fifthly does firing two shotguns take as long as firing six bullets from a revolver, I'd assume the revolver would be quicker. Sixthly surely the people who would benefit mostly from increased hit rates in darkened buildings would be pk'ers. seventhly, did you take this to Developing Suggestions first? Eighthly, what if the building is ruined? Ninethly, would the short period of light be visible to people outside, or in neighbouring buildings? Tenthly if I attack the flare gun user within the 2 shotgun time do I get the same boost to hit rates? --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:33, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
