20090515 GPS Suburb Display

Suggestion type

Suggestion scope
Anyone with a GPS unit
Suggestion description
I suggest allowing people to use GPS units to inform others of their general area. Clicking a GPS unit would cost 1AP and turn on this feature. Clicking it again would turn it off.
If you have a GPS unit your contact list would display the current suburb of any contact with an activated GPS unit in their inventory. Your own GPS need not be activated. This makes GPS units useful but risky to use, as they can attract both friends and enemies. However only providing the suburb, not the precise location, prevents them from being overpowered or overly dangerous.
Zombies would be able to use this as well, but they'd have to acquire their GPS units and turn them on or off while living. They could also drop activated GPS units while undead to go into hiding.
The advantage is obvious. You could check the current location of allies or well-known players (like group leaders) and join their general area in hopes of running into them. The disadvantage is also obvious; helping enemies pursue you. I don't think this would get abused too much though. Anyone really wanted dead would just keep their GPS off.

Keep Votes
- Keep Might be useful to some degree, so I'll give a keep. Nemesis645 16:49, 18 May 2009 (BST)
- Keep I like it. Pker's probably will as well. Also gives GPS a use that Metagaming can't.Legion8 07:07, 16 May 2009 (BST)
- Keep Nice touch, and nobody gets forced into anything. *votes*--Thadeous Oakley 10:57, 16 May 2009 (BST)
- Keep - Worth the risk. --Private Mark 20:07, 17 May 2009 (BST)
- Keep - Keeps the game balanced between those who use it to kill humans and those who use it to kill zombies. Also adds to a somewhat useless item. --Koryr T TA Y YRC 03:50, 18 May 2009 (BST)
- As for griefing I don't think it'll harm anyone too much. First off, most griefers don't target any one specific person. It's more about attacking a room of strangers than a single person. And if they do choose to hunt down a single person, they'd have to find them in the 100 square area of a suburb. Not impossible, but it requires a lot of AP that could otherwise be spent harassing many other people. As for assassinating group leaders - most group leaders would prefer they get killed once or twice but attract many more allies to their cause. And should it ever become too much of a problem a person can just turn off their GPS until their griefer moves on. --A Big F'ing Dog 15:31, 18 May 2009 (BST)
Kill Votes
- Kill Too useful for griefers. Even if you're just using it for your group, griefers will abuse it. --Yonnua Koponen Talk ! Contribs 12:52, 16 May 2009 (BST)
- I have to agree, this would seem to be pretty abuseable. Maybe it if was MUTUAL contacts, that would be better.--Pesatyel 20:53, 16 May 2009 (BST)
- Re The main reason I don't limit it to mutual contacts is that people usually add enemies to their contacts! Seems unreasonable that adding enemies to your list should be the only thing letting them track your GPS. --A Big F'ing Dog 15:11, 18 May 2009 (BST)
- True, but maybe something could be add to (maybe by color) to keep "enemies" from being affected.--Pesatyel 02:53, 19 May 2009 (BST) Also, this could hurt zombie anonymity and, lastly, REing every negative vote can be construed as vandalism.--Pesatyel 02:55, 19 May 2009 (BST)
- Kill - as above. Also, I feel it's rather unnecessary. And the on/off switch kind of makes it moot... I'd actually prefer it if it were "all or nothing", there's something more consistent and less "gamey" about that. --WanYao 20:15, 17 May 2009 (BST)
- Re I would agree, except I don't want to force anyone currently using GPS units to change their behavior if they don't want to. --A Big F'ing Dog 15:14, 18 May 2009 (BST)
- Kill - Further taking zombies out of the game, this is just another survivor/PKer toy. Also, it's completely unnecessary. If you want to keep in touch with people, get a mobile phone.--Necrofeelinya 21:30, 18 May 2009 (BST)
- Re This would potentially be insanely useful for zombies. They need this more than survivors do. They can't talk! By carrying active GPS units zombie groups could follow a leader from suburb to suburb, then find their allies through feeding groans. --A Big F'ing Dog 02:18, 19 May 2009 (BST)
Spam/Dupe Votes
- You can have Version 1 or Version 2 or yet another one - Version 2 even includes the mutual contacts restriction that is the source of most of your kill votes. Jesus H. Me, that's three from one page before I even hit the rest of the archive, do you not even make a token attempt to check these? -- . . <== DDR Approved Editor 02:26, 20 May 2009 (BST)
- Re Every single one of those requires mutual contacts, and a complex "approve" or "reject" system to allow individual people to track you. They also give a precise position. This is much less powerful, and much easier to set up. Carry a GPS, turn it on, people can see your general area. That is all. --A Big F'ing Dog 14:46, 22 May 2009 (BST)
- Dupe - Iscariot, you are the best. -- THELORDGUNSLINGER 02:35, 20 May 2009 (BST)

Advice to Suggesters
- Adding options to your suggestion is not good practice. Others will not vote on the options, only the main body; please don't ask them to do so.
- Once you have posted your suggestion, it is considered complete. Altering the suggestion mechanics after voting has begun nullifies existing votes, and is considered an abuse of the suggestions system. Doing so will result in your suggestion being removed from the voting system to removed suggestions, where you can work out the details and resubmit later if you desire. It is preferred that you remove your own suggestion and resubmit a new version with changes, if changes are needed.
- "Notes" added for clarification purposes, and correcting spelling/typos are permitted. When considering adding a clarification note, it is often better for all parties involved, for the author to remove the suggestion and resubmit it with the clarification included for the voters who have already placed their votes.
Advice to Voters
- You are voting on Suggestions, not Users. The text of your vote should not personally attack or denigrate the user who has submitted it... no matter how ridiculous the idea. Flaming and/or Trolling will not be tolerated.
- Before voting please read the Suggestions Dos and Do Nots and Frequently Suggested Ideas Page to read about concepts that have been generally considered unworkable in the past. You do not need to follow the guidelines on these pages but they are worth consideration before casting a vote.
- One vote per user. No exceptions. You cannot use multiple wiki accounts to vote on a suggestion.
- To Vote, use the [edit] button at the top of the voting section, then enter your vote in the the proper format to the end of the relevant section (keep/kill/spam).
- It is strongly recommended that voters (especially in the kill/spam sections) justify their vote to help others understand the reason they disagree. Feedback helps new suggesters get a feel for what the community does and does not want included in Urban Dead, and a deeper understanding of the balance needed for a workable suggestion.
- Votes must include a signature in order to be considered valid votes. To sign a vote, use --~~~~. Please remember to sign your votes! Unsigned votes will be deleted after 30 minutes or when found.
- Each Suggestion will be open to voting for two (2) weeks, measured from the suggestion's Timestamp, unless it is a Dupe or Spam. If, at the end of that time, there are two thirds (2/3) more Keep votes than Kill votes, the Suggestion will be moved to the Peer Reviewed Suggestions page. Otherwise, the Suggestion will be moved to the Peer Rejected Suggestions page.

Valid Votes
- Keep, for Suggestions that you believe have merit.
- Kill, for Suggestions that you believe do not have merit. If you need to discuss a rule fix, use the discussion page.
- Spam, for the most ridiculous suggestions.
- Suggestions can be removed with Spam votes as described on the cycling suggestions page. If the criterion described there are not fulfilled, the suggestion must remain for the whole two weeks.
- Spam votes are not a "strong kill", they are simply here to prevent the utterly ridiculous from clogging up the system. If you do not like the idea, and it's not some crazy uber power or something else ridiculous, VOTE KILL, NOT SPAM. Spam votes will be counted as Kill when votes are tallied.
- Dupe, for Suggestions that are exact or very close duplicates of previous suggestions. For a Dupe vote to be valid, a link must be provided to the original suggestion.

Invalid Votes
- Server Load and Programming Complexity are NOT very good Kill reasons. You are voting on the merit of the suggestion and whether or not you think it belongs in the game. Server load/complexity issues are up to Kevan to decide.
- X should be implemented first is not a valid reason for a vote. You are voting on the merit of THIS suggestion, not how it compares to others.
- Votes that do not have reasoning behind them are invalid. You MUST justify your vote.
|
Comments
- Re may be used to comment on a vote. Only the original author and the person being REd can comment. Comments are restricted to a single comment per vote, and it is expected that Re comments be as short as possible. Reing every kill vote is considered abuse of the Re comment. A Re does not count as a vote, and any subsequent discussion not part of the Re comment should be held on the discussion page if there is any extended commenting.
- Note is used by System Operators to invalidate trolling-based votes. Only Sysops may remove troll-based votes and they do so with a strikeout <s></s> in order to preserve the trolling removal for posterity. The voter may contest the strikeout with the Sysop that struck their vote out on the discussion page. Only a System Operator may remove a strikeout.
